Question:
Can we take Advil?
I had Open RNY (not transected). I have heard different things about ibuprofen. Anyway, is it OK to take Advil (Ibuprofen)? — Kay W. (posted on January 17, 2003)

Advil is specifically on my list of medicines NOT to take. I was told that
I could only have Tylenol / Acetaminophen. Also specifically on my no-no
list were aspirin, Aleve, Celebrex, Excedrin, Midol, Motrin, Vioxx and
Orudis-KT, whatever that is.

Advil is ibuprofen, which we are NOT supposed to take. Extra strength
Tylenol is on the approved list.

It's on my list of no's also. And, she specifically made it a point to
remind me of that several times. I think it can burn a hole in your stomach
or something because it will just sit there. Your new stomach will not
produce enough acid to dissolve it. They told me only tylenol for a pain
reliever.

NO, this was one of the first things I was warned about. It can cause an
ulcer.

I asked my surgeon at my 2 week appointment about ibuprofen, Vioxx, etc.
He said they were fine, just don't take them on an empty stomach. Bottom
line - check with YOUR surgeon.

My doc says Advil gel caps are OK, but none of the others you mentioned.

I met with my surgeon yesterday. And basically they told me that I could
take the gel filled Advil. If I wanted to take anything else it had to be
liquid, crushed or capsule. This goes for all meds.
Hope this helps.

NO, NO, NO, you cannot EVER take Ibouprofun (sp?) again, you can only take
tylenol. Please, please, everyone on here things they are an expert...but,
ask your surgeon....we discussed this last night at support group. You
must take tylenol! Please also keep in mind that alot of these surgeons
people have being seeing are not experts, then entered this field for other
reasons. If your surgeon is doing RESEARCH in the feild of obesity or has
been doing this surgery for over 10 years, then I feel he should know all.
Just my 2cents.

ADVIL? Never after surgery. Only TYLENOL. It won't irritate your
stomach. The ibuprofen in the Advil will without a doubt. Trust me cause
it happened to me.

once again those darn doctors are all telling their patients different
things. They need to get their stories straight. In the mean time, follow
your own Drs. advice, He/ she knows YOUR unique medical history and is the
best judge of wht you should or should not take.

I had open RNY - transsected - and my surgeon says NO to Advil or other
products containing Ibuprofen or aspirin. He does allow me to take
Celebrex when I absolutely have to - but for only 5 days at a time. Then I
have to wait at least 5 days before I can take another one. I have bad
arthritis and was taking 12 Advil a day before surgery. I had my celebrex
filled June 16 and didn't get it refilled til December 29 (prescription was
for 30 pills), so I don't take it often.

I had really bad menstrual cramps for awhile after surgery, and Tylenol
wasn't helping at all. So I asked my surgeon about it, and he said that I
could take an Advil, but I MUST take a Zantac with it, otherwise I could
get an ulcer. But I would ask your surgeon! (8/7/02 -100)
