Question:
How do you take regular Rx right away after surgery?

I have Rx that I have to take every day. If I don't, I go through withdrawal. Most are pill form, one is a capsule, none are liquid. How have you handled this situation? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!    — Heidi H. (posted on January 14, 2003)

I'm preop, but I was told by the nurse practitioner at my surgeon's office to contact my pharmacist and PCP to have my three medications (ToprolXL for blood pressure,WellbutrinSR for depression and Protonix for GERD)changed to meds that could be crushed or made into liqiud forms. By changing the ToprolXL and WellbutrinSR to non-extended release forms, they can be crushed. I will have to change the Protonix to a different medication (Prevacid) which comes in a capsule that can be opened up and mixed with water or a food like applesauce.

The only thing I changed post op was to take chewable vitamins for ahile. I took my regular pills, which were Toprol XL, Zocor, Celexa and vitamins. Nothing got stuck. I'm about 10 weeks out and still take pills without problems, and I switched back to regualr Centrum after I finished up the chewables. Follow your surgeon's instructions.
