Question:
I need some opinions on protein powders please.
What kinds have you all tried that work and taste the best and how do you mix them? I am looking for ideas. Thanks :) — Carolyn D. (posted on January 13, 2003)

Hi...after trying several different types, I found I really like the
Isopure chocolate and vanilla powder. I DON'T like the price that GNC
charges so, I buy mine online. I found it on sale at OnStarHealth.com and
have also purchased it from VitaLady. I mix them both w/ the vanilla no
sugar added carnation instant breakfast drink or sugar free hot chocolate
mix. One thing I like about it is that it dissolves very easily and can be
mixed w/ a spoon or shaker. I mix my powders before leaving the house and
take them w/ me. All I need later is cold water and a few ice cubes and
yummmm. Hope you find something that works for you!

My favorite is also the Isopure Zero Carb vanilla. But I also have been
using the Real Meals chocolate lately but only about 1/3 of the package at
a time (60 grams in the entire package). I put the powder in a blender
with ice and water and sweetener and 1/2 a banana (for the chocolate) and
banana and frozen strawberries in the vanilla. YUM! You can also put 1/2
tablespoon of peanut butter into the chocolate powder for a great flavor.
Or get some coconut extract, some crushed pineapple in its own juice and
use the vanilla powder for a pina colada. I would suggest that you go to
www.vitalady.com and try some samples, she sells them for about 2-3 dollars
persample. I did that and found a lot that I didn't like before finding
the few that I do like. I've heard that ProScore 100 chocolate is really
good but haven't tried it yet...

hiya. i use two kinds: Jarrow's Iso Rich Soy Protein powder (get it online
at: www.vitamintrader.com)2 tbls= 110 calories, 0 fat, 0 sugar, 0 carbs and
25g protein. it is formulated so that it doesn't break down in heat or
freezing. you can cook with it and bake with it. you cannot do that with
the whey protein or soy protein "shakes". i add it to most meals
to boost my protein intake.
i also use: EAS Advantage Strength Series Chocolate Whey protein (23 g
protein, 100 calories, low sugar/carbs don't remember exact # off top of
head) i get it at walmart.
every morning i mix 1/2 serving of each the jarrows and eas to my coffee,
add some vitamite (milk sub) and heavy whipping cream and start the day
with 30g of protein, and it doesn't taste like a protein shake.
i have protein shake recipes and other recipes incorporating the jarrows on
my website:

As a general rule, I hate most protein powders. The only one that I can
tolerate is made by GNC - it is a berry flavor, and takes OK if it is cold.
The nice thing about GNC is that if you try something, and don't like it,
you can get a 100% refund - even after the package has been used.

I have tried at least a dozen different protein shakes, and the ones I keep
coming back to are the EAS Advantage Whey Protein Powder. They have it in
both chocolate and vanilla, although the vanilla can sometimes be hard to
find. Most of the time I can get them both at my local Wal-Mart. I like to
make my shake with 1 scoop of the protein powder and 6-8oz of ice cold skim
milk. It is ok with water, but the milk is much better. The one thing I
would recommend to anyone is to buy a bottle of DaVinci sugar free vanilla
syrup. It is sweetened with Splenda, and it really enhances the flavor. I
use it in both the chocolate and vanilla shakes. It seems to take away any
chalkiness. I also buy it at Wal-Mart, in the coffee isle. They have
hazelnut in the sugar free syrup too, but I prefer the vanilla.

I would suggest ordering samples from Vitalady or any place that sells
samples. I've had some horrendous samples and some great ones. I tend to
like the berry ones so I love Isopure Strawberry, MetRx Berry Blast and
ProBlend Wild Berry. I add a packet of splenda and a couple of spoons of
sf jello mix such as strawberries and bananas or just a plain berry packet.
For a great berry treat, use Designer Protein Natural, 2 packets Splenda,
a few frozen blueberries and a few frozen strawberries. VERY YUM. Add
different fruit combinations as you think of them.

Proscore 100 Chocolate, available from www.vitalady.com, mixed with water
and put in the freezer for 15 minutes or so. It doesn't need dressing up!
Each serving has 30 gr. of protein (two scoops), 2-4 gr./carbs (can't
recall which), and no sugar or fat.

I like Real Meals. It has 60 grams of protein plus a lot of vitamins that
other drinks don't have. I had tried several others before this one and
liked this the best. I know that Linda Almonte has a list of recipes to
use with them on her profile. They have a website for post ops at
www.protein-solution.com

I use GNC 100% Whey Protein, chocolate flavor. I drink it in on my way
into work for breakfast that way when I get into work I am ready to start
drinking my water for the day. I'm 4 months post-op and down 70 lbs.

I use either Procel or UpcalD that I get from Vitalady. They don't have
any flavor and can be mixed into Crystal Light without affecting the taste,
although they do affect the texture a little bit. I use 4-6 scoops in a 16
oz. glass of Crystal Light and drink it on the way to work. I get the rest
of my protein from food.
