Question:
glucosamine chondroitin
I am wanting more information on glucosamine chondroitin and WLS. I do not have arthritis but have a really bad crunching sound in my knee (no pain) My PCP recommended taking this. If glucosamine has sugar in it and I haven't eaten sugar in three months (like I use to anyway)could the weak cartilage be due to a sugar deficiency? Can the glucose in this vitamin make you dump? My PCP said she has another WLS patient with the same issue. Coincidence? Thanks for any information. — JJW B. (posted on January 8, 2003)

I've had increasing problems with arthritis for the last 10 years, and just
last year my PCP suggested taking G.C. It is expensive, so I put it off.
Last month (after almost 7 months post-op open RNY), I started taking it -
3 pills/day. I have noticed some improvement in my knee, ankle & hip
pains, but my arthritic finger joints still flare up and hurt. I'm not
sure it's beneficial enough to offset the cost, but I'll continue treatment
for 6 months and decide then. BTW - what I'm taking is reportedly one of
the better brands (SCHIFF - Glucosamine 500 mg Plus MSM 500 mg--bottle had
250 'large' tablets in it for a price of around $18). Hope this info is
helpful.......Marilyn
