How long did you have to use pain meds after surgery?

I had 1st surgery (LAP RNY) on a Wed and had a morphine drip. They
detected a leak on Thursday and went back in for surgery and had morphine
drip until early evening. Remainder of Thursday and Friday I had Toridol
(sp?). That's it. I went home Sunday with no meds and didn't even need
Tylenol. As a matter of fact, last week was the first time since surgery
that I even had a headache and I took 1 Tylenol and felt better pretty
quickly. I went from taking Advil almost daily for various weight related
aches and pains to not taking a single pain reliever in almost 8.5
months!!! :-)

MaryAnn, I never took pain meds once I left the hospital, but everyone is
different and so is their pain level. I tool Tylenol w/ codiene while in
the hospital and left with a perscription, but, never used it. Oh, I lied,
each month when I get my period and have cramps, I take 2 tsp (no yet
expired) and since we cannot take advil or aleve anymore, it does the
trick! Good Luck (8/15 305/226/150)

I stopped taking the self-administered IV pain drug (demerol??)the second
day after I was moved up to my own room from ICU. The surgeon wanted me to
get a prescription for Tylenol-Codiene to go home with.... but I declined.
I think I broke down and took regular Tylenol ONCE when I got home from the
hospital - but that was for a backache from the surgery (laying in 1
position too long) and not from the incision pain.

I hardly used my pain pump in the hospital. I had open rny and all it felt
like as if I did 100 sit ups. I had general soreness. After I went home I
had a prescription for Tylenol w/codeine. I filled it for, a just in case,
and took it once, only to try to sleep.

Had surgery on Monday afternoon.... Wednesday noon I was off all pain meds.
Took one dose of liquid hydrocodone on the way home because I had an 1 1/2
hour ride home.

I had Open RNY and was on a morphine pump for the entire 5 days I was in
the hospital. I pretty much stopped using the pump and the shots I was
given (brain fart on the name of the shot) the night before my release. I
was given a script of Dilaudid upon my release and got a refill at my 2
week follow-up. I had severe pain from my g-tube and when it was pulled I
was told that it was in there more snugly than usual (I figured this out!
LOL) and he had to literally YANK the thing out. Let me tell you that
Dilaudid and I were close personal friends for another week or so after
that. I really felt that had I not had so many problems with my g-tube I
would have been off the pain meds a lot sooner. Good luck to you!

Hello Mary Ann,
I was on Morphine for the first 24 hours and then I was taken off...that's
all that I needed...I stayed in the hospital 3 full days and came home on
the 4th. After the ride home (1 1/2 hour trip) I did get my Tylenol with
Codein filled and used that one time...but since then I have not had even
regular Tylenol....but as everyone says, we are all different and we should
not compare. Not everyone tolerates pain the same. Open RNY Nov. 19th and
down 35 pounds! YeeHaw!! lol Love and light,

I agree that you shouldn't judge your pain by other's experiences. Having
said that, I will tell you that I used the PCA pump with demerol for a day
and a half. I had surgery on Thursday and they took the IV out on Saturday
morning. I had demerol injections after that but they were mostly for my
knee which I had injured badly and was giving me fits. The surgery wasn't
painful much at all after the first 36 hours. I took nothing for pain
after leaving the hospital.

Does it depend on your size and having an open rny??? I am still pre-op and
have been trying to get my mind and body ready for this experience because
I have never been in the hospital for anything, never broke or sprained
anything so my threshold for pain is very very low :-) Are the posters
below the norm or the exception? Is it tolerable to use the restroom and
move around without the meds? I have nightmares that I am going to strain
or pull something.Vesta
