Question:
...Citrus Fruit...
I have a quick question. I'm just about 2 months post-op and I've been craving citrus fruit...oranges, tangerines, clementines, etc...My first question is...is it too soon to eat citrus? How much is too much? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :o) — Tracy A. (posted on January 5, 2003)

Hi. I am 9 weeks post-op and have eaten citrus fruit. The clementines are
just the right size! I have been able to eat a whole one. I do peel the
skin/membrane off of each section before I eat it, and am cautious about
how much of it I eat.

I'm only 5 wks, I drink orange juice big time, and eat fruits. I suck on
oranges, tangerines etc. I say go for them.

I LOVE red grapfruit right now. I don't think 2 months post-op is too
soon. Have a little of what you crave and see how your stomach reacts. I
can eat half a grapefruit and it doesn't cause any dumping for me, but then
I'm usually too full to eat anything else. For me at least, I've found
that if I'm craving something, than my stomach will usually react well to
it. I ate tons of corn on the cob this summer and had no problems
whatsoever. Good luck and just go slow.

I was allowed to start eating fresh fruit at six weeks post-op. With
citrus, I did peel off the membrane for a few months (I no longer do that).
But, ask your doctor - he is the final authority on what you should eat
when. My surgeon allowed us to start fresh fruits and vegetables at six
weeks but other doctors have more conservative post-op plans.

I don't think its too soon, but I dont' know what your doctor feels. I
craved citrus and tomatoes about 1 month post op, it drove me nuts and I
wasn't sure if I could have them or handle them so I just tried one small
piece of an orange. I peeled the membrane off too, or just chew on them
till all the juice is gone. I didn't have a problem at all with them at
all. When I am craving something sweet and bad for me, I immediately turn
to fruit to take care of those bad cravings and it always works. Just try
a little at a time and see how you handle it. I am just now almost 3 months
out and I eat a whole orange but I wouldn't call it eating really, as I
just chew the juice out of them then throw the rest away. Just listen to
your body's reactions is my advice, that is the only way when I know when
something is too much as it seems with different foods I get full faster or
slower.

I am 4 months post-op and eat a whole orange. In the beginning I basically
sucked on the oranges. Now I am eating all types of fruits.

I had surgery on 11/26/02 and I can eat oranges and grapefruits as long as
I take the skin off on the outside and the inside. Ask you doctor or
dietition.
