Question:
If you don't eat what do you do?
Prior to my surgery I want to start some new coping skills because once I have the surgery I will not be able to turn to food to comfort me etc. What do you do? — Meg L. (posted on December 27, 2002)

I write when i need comfort. I always keep a pen and a small little
notebook on me at all times. It helps me put all my agravation, sadness,
happiness, and all other feelings in a book i can close and thats where
they stay.

There are therapists with special training in coping skills. Most
insurance companies will cover this.

I will be having my surgery within the next month (I hope). I also have a
journal. But for hanging out with my husband and kids in front of the TV
(which is when we do a lot of mindless snacking) I have recently taken up
knitting. Not only does everyone get a pair of socks/scarf/etc., but it
keeps my hands busy.

I am down approximately 200 lbs. since my surgery in March 2001.
Definitely, there are times when I have felt bored without my old eating
standby to keep me entertained. I have replaced eating, however, with
several things that are working for me much better than eating ever did:
working out at the gym 4-5x/wk, socializing with friends, shopping,
meditating, taking up new hobbies such as crafts, sewing, etc., volunteer
work, community groups, etc. I just have SOOO much more energy now. The
last thing I want to do is sit around and pig out in front of the tv. It's
amazing how many other things can take the place of food, when you're open
to that possibility.
