Question:
Does type of RNY affect
Can anyone tell me if the type of RNY surgery you have effect the dumping symptoms. I'm not a real big sweet eater but don't know if I can go the rest of my life without one cookie or sliver or cake. — lindadougherty (posted on December 13, 2002)

Linda, are you talking about Lap RNY and open RNY? They are the same
surgery on the inside just different on the outside! I do not think you
will have to go the rest of your life without something sweet. Everyone is
different. Some people can eat alot of sugar and some not too much sugar.
You will quickly learn how much you can handle. There are gastric bands
available and I believe that sugar is not even a factor with those
surgeries. Best of luck. Lap RNY 10/25/02 down 30 lbs.

By type of RNY I meant by how much they acually bypass. Like proximal vs.
distal?
Thanks for answering,

Hi there! Unfortunately hon, I don't dump. I had an open rny on November 14
and my husband, who makes durn sure I stick to my doctors orders almost to
the letter treats me with a cookie every once in awhile. It doesnt bother
me, but I also make sure that its not an all of the time thing or that I
dont go past one. I wish I did dump. Good luck!

Suger free cookie's, suger free candy, suger free ice cream. It's all out
there. I,m 7 month's post-op and I have not ate anything that has suger in
it or had any dumping symptoms. But when I get a craving it's suger free
for me.

Non it doesnt. LAP or open which is how your insides are accessed, proximal
or distall, thats bypass length doesnt affect you dumping likelyhood. Now
nearly everyone post op can eat one cookie or sliver of cake,. Its when you
increase volume of sweets they can make you dump or feel icky. My first
food, a popsicle in the hospital after my leak test was a regular popsicle.
It went down fine. They didnt have sugare free oines in stock at the time.

There are definitely some tasty sugar free cookies out there. However I
went through a brief phase (can you say PMS?) where I was munching those
sugar free cookies once or twice a day until the package was gone (a
serving, 3 cookies usually). I found that these things cause me to crave
MORE carbohydrates. So now I decided I do better having that occasional
regular cookie, one doesn't do any harm to me as far as dumping and really
satisfies that sweet craving even better than 3 little sugar free cookies.
But everyone is different. So be careful but enjoy either one occasionally!

With the RNY there is always the posibility of dumping and problems with
sugars, but not always the case as you can see from some of the previous
posters. But if you were referring to the Duodenal Switch procedure,
another weight loss surgical procedure, there is no chance of problems with
sugars.
