Question:

Does anyone have a good book or two to recommend that covers, before, during and after WLS? — Lynn W. (posted on December 9, 2002)

Barb Thompsons is great. She is a member here and had surgery herself. Then
wrote the book. <P>http://www.wlscenter.com/

I found the book by Michelle Boasten very good and informative. She gets
on a level we can understand. Also, she seems to cover most areas of this
surgery.
It is called "Weight Loss Surgery - Understanding and Overcoming
Morbid Obesity"

I read a book I liked a lot pre op called "The Doctor's Guide to
WLS"..I cannot remember the author but I ordered it from BAMM.com or
amazon.com. It had sample food menus. The only thing is it was written a
couple of years ago and I don't think it some newer stuff like LAP Band. It
had a lot of good stuff about what to expect on your consult visit, in the
hospital, post op, etc.

I agree with Bob. Barbara Thompson's book is GREAT! Since it is written
from the patients perspective, you get the good, bad and ugly if it all!
The title is "Weight Loss Surgery: finding the thin person hiding
inside you" and is at www.wlscenter.com. Good luck! Renee D
PS>>>>At her website you can also sign up for her monthly
newsletter which gives out lots of great information.

"The Complete Guide to Obesity Surgery" can be gotten at
http://www.obesitysurgerybook.com.
That is the one I used and I thought it was very good. I read it at least
3 times as it had so much information in it I couldn't retain it all the
first time.

I agree with Bob. The title of her book is "Weight Loss Surgery-
Finding the Thin Person Hiding Inside You". I found this book really
helpful. It explained the different surgeries and surgical terms and
explained it all very plainly. I actually gave this book to family members
who had questions.

I have written down my own personal pre- and post- WLS story (it's only a
few pages long), as well as what to expect from Consultation all the way
through yearly post-op visits. If anyone is interested, just drop me a
note and I'll email it to you.

The book that I found most helpful was by Barbara Thompson 'Finding the
Thin Person Inside' A guide to Weight Loss Surgery. Barbara is a WLS
graduate so it is full of personal experience along with great medical
information.
