Question:
What's the reason again?
Can someone tell me what's the actual reason why you can't drink after eating for at least 30 min. That's what I miss the most I think. I do like to drink coffee after a meal. What's the actual reason that I can't. Will I gain weight from it? Thanks — Peggy D. (posted on December 7, 2002)

My nutritionist says that your tummy is like a funnel. You have the food
at the bottome slowely coming out...now if you put water on top of the
food...what's it going to do? It's going to spill over (cause you to
vomit). She also says the reason you can't drink WITH your meal is because
it washes the food out faster, causing less absortion and quicker hunger.

My surgeon said that you shouldn't drink right after eating because it
helps to push the food out of the pouch too quickly. The longer it takes
your food to pass out of the pouch, the longer you will have the sensation
of being "full" and satisfied. The liquid helps to wash the
solid food through too quickly. I admit, I do occasionally sip liquid with
my meals. But I don't make a habit of it. Good Luck.

Yes, not eating and drinking together is diffuclt. The reason is the
liquid washes the food right thru your pouch and you're not getting your
proper nutrition, plus you are going to be hungry again very quickly. This
is not to say I have never done it. When I went to Vegas on vacation,
those buffets are endless.........so I sipped water as I ate so I could get
more in. But I wouldn't make it a habit. It could slow your weight loss
down. Happy journey.

I would LOVE to drink w/ my meals, because prior to WLS thats when I COULD
easily get in my fluids. Now, however, I have "strangulating"
pain if I eat AND drink. A whole new dimension to learn for me.....
