Question:
Please tell me if this is OK????
Hi All, I am two weeks post op tomorrow. I have been on all liquids and tonight I was going nuts wanting REAL food. I had about an ounce and a half of diluted pea soup and a half ounce of tune which I chewed to mush. I am so very full now, although I don't think it will make me vomit etc. Did I eat too much? Is what I had OK or is it too soon? I see my Dr tomorrow, but I feel so guilty. Any advice most appreciated! — Katie E. (posted on December 4, 2002)

You did just fine. My doc had us on soft (chewed well) food before we even
left the hospital. Good luck on your journey. Marsha

Seem's like your choice was just fine. You'll find as yougo on your stomach
will tell you when you've done something wrong. Small amounts spaced over
time. A lot of trial and error. Everyone seems to have a diffent tolorance
level for differnt food. I'm 18 wks post op and down 104lbs. Some foods go
down well other don't. Keep trying diffent thinks but always rember small,
small portions. Good Luck!

Good Job Katie. Not all of us can make it without food for so long and
your choices were good. Push that protein, just make sure you do not eat
too much cause it HURTS and let me tell you, you don't want that!! My doc
had me on liquids for 4 weeks, but I did eat broth out of soup and finally
was starving at three weeks out and munched some tuna. Take care and NO
MORE GUILT, we have had enough of that in our lives!!

Hi Katie! I felt the same way as you,,, and wanted to get some protein in
badly! So I mixed up some canned chicken with a tablespoon of mayo, and a
chopped up sweet pickle. I was able to eat almost 1/4 cup of chicken, and
while it did feel heavy in my tummy, I didnt throw up.
It just depends on your body. I dont want to sabotage my tool, but it is
so hard to eat protein when we are on purreed.

Hi - I agree with everything already said and only want to add one little
point: Remember to eat very slowly, so that your stomach will tell you
you're full when - not after - you've eaten enough. I'm 4 weeks out and
the only problem I've had that caused pain or nausea was not what I ate but
forgetting to eat SLOWLY; consequently, a couple times I felt terrible for
about 1/2 hour after eating too fast and finding out too late. Keep up the
good work. P.S. My surgeon also had me on solids before I left the
hospital.

Why do you feel guilty?? Did your surgeon okay it? If not then WHY did you
do it?? If he did approve it then you have no need to feel guilty.
My surgeon had me on liqids for 3 weeks..(it was hell, and I made
it...barely) (chicken broth with unflavored protien powder was my saving
grace..still is..it gives it quite a bit more substance..and is much more
satisfying and filling then just plain broth.. During the 3 weeks
(including Thanksgiving) I kept telling myself..hey, look you CAN do this
for 3 weeks.. It's ONLY 3 weeks..not the rest of your life. After all I
didn't have someone rearange my insides from how the good lord made me to
NOT follow my surgeon's expert advice. HELLO! That's part of the
"commitment" and the "mental preparation" that needs to
go one before the surgery..I would hope after going through all that we had
to prior to surgery,(jumping through insurance hoops, pr-op testing, etc,)
during surgery(fear of dying, frightened family members)and after surgery
(PAIN, nausea, and more PAIN) surely that we could muster the
"willpower" to follow the surgeon's orders to the letter for that
short amount of time... I am sure that I will get bashed on here..but you
asked for advice..PLEASE consider this "tough love" from a fellow
WLS sister..that's my two cents.. however unpopular it may be! I am sure
the fat and carbohydrate gods will get me! LOL! Sincerely, I wish you
nothing but sucess and happiness. Best of luck to you!
