Question:
Should the pillow be firm or feather filled, for coughing?
I remember from 20 years ago how much better it is to hold a pillow over your tummy, after surgery, when coughing. Now I have a big, fluffy, feather pillow. Should I consider taking a firmer pillow along for the car ride home from the hospital? It is a two-hour drive. — jocelyn (posted on November 29, 2002)

I don't think it matters which kind. It's just to keep your innards from
being jostled when you cough, so even a folded up sweater or jacket would
work just as well. By the time you get out of the hospital, you won't be
coughing up the anesthesia too much. That happens mostly the first day or
two post-op. Hugs, Joy

Doctor gave me an oval shape pillow that was very firm and it did the trick
nicely.

Firm is better. In fact, you can even use a folded up blanked or large
towel-sheet. BTC gives you a pillow to take home specifically for this.

I found I didn't even need the pillow because I was wearing a binder that
did the trick for me.

Firm is better. When you cough you need to put a small amount of pressure
against the pillow to your stomach and that will help brace you. I hope
that this will help you. I will keep you in my thoughts.
