Question:
Very low White Blood Count?

Hi! In 2 day's I'll be 6 mos. out, down 101 lbs. starting weight 287. I went in for my 6 mos. labs. all looks well except for my white blood cell count. At 3 mos. my White count was 3,800 (normal is 4,800-10,800) a little low but all seemed well! Now 6 mos. out it's at 2,000, not at all well! I have no other symptoms, no fever, ect..... I test NEG. for HIV, which I know is the big one for low blood count. My PCP doesn't have alot of info on Gastric Patients and acually recomended me posting this to see if anybody else had this problem due to their Surgery??? We are going to wait 3 mos. and test again if nothing happens before then. He just told me to be careful around sick people! This may seem like a silly question to post, but it seems to have us stumped! Thanks a bunch!    — Tambi B. (posted on November 21, 2002)

I have not yet had WLS and my White Blood cell count is very low right now....One Dr. freaked out about it, and then I got a 2nd and 3rd opinion. I've been tested for EVERYTHING. I was told that change in diet, allergies, and just about anything could cause a White Blood Cell count to drop.... I would wait and see. If you're not feeling unwell, (either was I) then it may be something very simple... Good Luck!

Are you on any medications that can make it drop?? Zantac can cause a decrease in WBC's. Ask your pharmicist if there is anything that he/she sees that could cause a drop in WBC's. Are you getting in all of your vitamins?? Make sure you do, it will help (at least a little) prevent infections while your blood count is so low.

I'm having the opposite problem...mine is too high. Not a concern yet, but we're watching it. Could just be I was a bit dehydrated the day we did labes, but ?? Will be interested to see the responses you get to this question.
