I am in the middle of a battle with my insurance company. My bmi is 42 with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, and both my mother & grandmother had their first major heart attack by 30 (I'm creeping up at 25). But my insurance company has a "wls exclusion" - I've sent in documentation from as far back as 1990, dr & surgeon letters supporting this surgery for me & I still can't get them to approve it. I don't make enough $ for a self pay - and I'm starting to feel hopeless - Is there anything that I might have missed??? Please help!!!! — amandalianne (posted on November 18, 2002)

I really don't have a good suggestion but I have you seen the exclusion for
WLS in writing? For example, my insurance does not specify WLS as being
covered, it just states that medically necessary procedures are covered.
Just a thought.

Well I have a weight loss exclusion(BCBS of GA PPO), it states no treatment
for obesity, and no weight loss surgery. Thank God I just found out that I
was approved last wednesday. When I was applying for surgery I was told of
the exclusion but my insurance said they could not deny if I could prove
that it was medically necessary. I don't know maybe my case is different I
have a BMI of 71, co morb degenerative disc disease, extreme pain(back,
foot, neck) after car accident. I'll keep you in my prayers, good luck.
