Question:
Just started on solids and now I have pain after 2 bites.
When I was on pureed I had scrambled egg with cheese and it went down fine. Now pretty much everything including the egg w/ cheese causes me bad pains right around the breast bone area. It lasts for 15 or so minutes. I get the same pain though faintly when I forget and gulp instead of sip my liquids. Is it a stricture or more simple like too big of a bite? I feel like I chew everthing to pieces so I dont think that is it. Do I need to take the pepcid that was prescribed? Would that help. I don't understand how I could go from eating the full portion allowed on pureed to eating 2 bites of regular food and feeling so much discumfort. ANY advice is appreciated. — cherokey55 (posted on November 8, 2002)

Teri
I too have just started more solid foods and the same things happen. I was
eating my soups and mashed potatoes with a regular spoon. I switch to a
baby spoon to make my self take smaller bits and still I chew chew chew.
But it seems to help. Good luck......

normal, your feeling of "full" has changed. THe thinner/ mushier
foods go down easier and the feeling of full is not there as quickly. The
amount of food you can eat will increase over time, and you will feel like
you are eating more normally.

I am now 7 weeks post op and when that happened I thought my golly I am
having a heart attack. Just make sure your bites are small and there is a
reason they say take 30 minutes to eat because I need to rest between
bites. I don't know what the food must being going thru getting in and out
of the pouch but it requires me taking a few minutes to let it happen and
then I can eat a few more bites. Hec I can eat a whole scrambled egg now
Whoo Hoo!!!
It is normal is the important thing to let you know.
Good Luck

Teri, I have the same problem...sometimes even with water. I am 4 weeks
post op. I know that I'm having trouble remembering to slow everything
down. I don't know the reason or solution but I just wanted you to know
that you are not alone. I'll be reading what others posts have to say.
Thanks for your question. Debbie

Could possibly be a stricture. I am 4 months out and was just dilated
today. I always felt like I ate slower than my other WLS friends, but
figured everyone is different. Just recently I was getting the pain you
described like right after two or three bites and hardly ate for 2 days.
Then I bit the bullet and went to the gastrointerologist (sp?) and was
scoped today. My stoma opening was 6mm, a little small according to the
doctor. He dilated me to 10mm and I can't believe how incredibly easier it
is to eat. I can finally finish a meal in 20 minutes, no the 30-45 it was
taking me. Also, before, I had to chew my food to liquid in order to get
it down. Now I can chew it to mush without any worry of it going down. I
was also not getting full before since it was taking me so long to eat. I
encourage you to speak to your surgeon. Any pain is no good and should be
investigated. Good luck!
