Question:
okay I need to know, am I normal I am 4 weeks postop and can eat
3/4 of a kids hamburger from mcdonalds. I have also had 3/4 of a hotdog. I know prior to surgery I would had eaten much much more, but does this sound normal? Does anyone else eat what I have or the amount that I have . Thanks for your feedback. — Schatzie1 (posted on October 27, 2002)

I was able to eat the same amount as you at that stage (as long as I chewed
everything well). My problem was that I "dumped" on the high fat
content (still do). Be careful.

I was able to eat like that too at your stage. I thought I was eating too
much too. But I am now 5 mos post op and at goal, my doctor even told me
not to try and loose anymore so it must not have been to much. On my
profile I have a list of foods I was eating at your stage, it might give
you some ideas.

It doesn't sound like you're eating to much (although that may depend on
whether or not you're eating the bun too).
[preacher voice]
My question for you is, why are you still eating crap?!?! I have been
trying my hardest to use this surgery as a TOOL. A tool that will allow me
to MAKE BETTER DECISIONS!!! And it's working. I used to eat a #3 at
McDonald's AT LEAST 4 times a week. I am 2.5 months post-op and haven't
even stepped foot in that place since. I don't even miss it! Keep in mind
that eventually we'll both be able to eat A LOT more than we can in the
early stages and the changes we make now will be what helps us out in the
long run!
[end preacher voice]
P.S. Sorry for preaching, but I have so many friends who have had this
surgery and DON'T CHANGE THEIR EATING HABITS!!! They act like it's some
kind of miracle and then they start to regain once they get to goal.

Everyone is different. I suggest you check with your surgeon's office. I
wasn't allowed any meat at 4 weeks, I had to wait 8 weeks for bread! I'm
17 mos. postop and I still don't eat that much of something with bread. I
avoid bread all together. I have to agree with the other poster, these are
not good healthy choices. Try to stick with "real" foods rather
than processed or fast foods. Grilled fish and chicken were the first
meats I was allowed and only after vegetables were tolerated. Now I eat
mostly chicken and always eat the protein first then if I'm still
hungry/have room, I will eat some vegetables. I stay clear of too many
carbohydrates other than fruit, which I eat for my "snack meals".
I eat 6 times a day...3 meals and 3 snack meals. Just be careful...

I am just over 5 weeks post-op and I sort of gave up eating meat because
everytime I do it either gets stuck or I end throwing it up because it just
sits there. I am curious about how you feel after eating the burger and hot
dog. A couple of weeks agao I tried the mat from a Burger King burger (I
was at work and forgot my dinner and really had no choice) and I have to
say, chewing it till there was no more was disgusting. I could taste all of
those little things that one should not know about! Ewwwww.....Are you
eating the bun too? I can't even nibble on the outside of a biscuit without
feeling like crap. Its odd, I was eating better the first two weeks after
than I am now. Go figure. Like other posters said, watch those carbs!! Good
luck to you!...Karen (lap RNY 9/20/02- down 56lbs.)

Here we go again! Every time someone posts the proverbial "Am I
eating too much?/the wrong things?/whatever..." question, people feel
compelled to chime in with their version of "Why are you eating
junk!/crap!/whatever..." Arragh! The way I see it, hamburgers and
hotdogs are good sources of protein, so if you can tolerate it, eat it.
What do post ops on this site want you to exist on? Tofu?

I agree with Rebecca on this one! Also Karen, I have a lot of trouble
eating burgers from fast food joints. Not so bad from a sit-down
restaurant and fine when I fix it myself at home from lean burger. The
stuff from the burger joints tastes too gritty and greasy to me.

The 3/4 of a kid's hamburger is OK as is the 3/4 of a hotdog, but you'd
probably be better off skipping the buns. I'd much rather have a
home-cooked hamburger off my George Foreman grill than one of those Mickey
D's ones (and no, I don't eat the whole thing at one - I limit my portions
to 2 oz).

I don't think the postee meant that she was eating this food at every meal,
she was probably just trying to show portion size. A hamburger or hot dog
once in a while is fine (although with my diet after surgery I was not
allowed real foods until about week six- even then it was easily digestible
stuff and I tried sticking to that). Postee's diet from her surgeon may be
different?! Who knows? I know many of us venture out and eat Taco Bell's
refried beans once post op, and they too- have quite a bit of fat in them!
Still, these beans seem to be "acceptable"? All in all, we
really DON'T get to eat a lot of food! I am sure with the consumption with
these foods, the consumers still stay below the "normal" intake
of calories, don't you think?

Karen B-C, Yes, I would think that a MAT from Burger King (or any
restaurant for that matter) would be very tough, dirty and hard to chew;
and I cannot be sure it would even be suggested as a post WLS diet choice
(probably very little nutritional value etc.)! Just kidding! ;) he he

What is a mat?

I mean in regards to what Karen BC wrote, not Karen R LOL

She meant to write meat, but wrote mat, like a floor mat. A floor mat
would be tough and chewy........ just trying to be funny. I guess it's not
that funny if people don't know what the h^&* you are trying to be
funny about!

Thanks karen - I got your joke before, but I didn't understand the
"mat" from the other Karen ... I am ashamed of myself, I thought
I was fluent in TYPO. LOL

Whoops!...The really funny thing was that I was talking about meat in the
sentences before that. Why would one think I was talking about a mat? You
goobers! *lol*
