Question:
An odd pain----staple line disruption?
Before anyone decides to flame away---save yourself the trouble. I've beat myself up royally enough already. So skip it. Tuesday at lunch I ate about a cup of cottage cheese with some low-carb granola in it. Probably too much, but I was in a conference and knew I wouldn't have a chance to eat anything until that evening. No pain while eating, just very full when done. Sat through the conference with no major problems. I ate a whopper jr for dinner---that's it---btw, I'm on the road on a business trip---this seemed like the lesser of some evils---I'm sicker than a dog that night---even drinking water hurt. The pain has stuck with me since. It's a cross between feeling like a stomach cramp---and a hunger pang. All I've had for about 48 hrs is oatmeal or soup---water still hurts. If I'm in pain tomorrow I'm calling my dr. I just returned home this afternoon. Any clues on what the heck I've done to myself? — Lucky B. (posted on October 10, 2002)

Do you know if you are transected or not? I'm thinking you just made your
pouch mad at you. I've done it and the pouch does not forgive easily,
sometimes for a day or two. Since you're home now, you can get scoped for
damages, but try really hard to assess your situation so you can present
the story when you call. Most people do not "feel" a SLD.

If you are not transected I don't think you would feel much of anything
with a SLD...if you are transected it takes several days to become
painful...since the area where we've been cut and rerouted doesn't have the
same sort of pain receptors as say your arm, the pain will usually manifest
in your left shoulder blade into your left side...and hurt like the devil.
The pain is generally caused by foodstuff being in area where it shouldn't
be I believe, ie, behind your diaphragm. Been there, done that. I would
definately give your surgeon a call to double check, but I'm agreeing with
first poster and thinking major dumping. Good luck! -Kim open RNY 7/17/01
-135 BTW pre-op I'da had two JR whoppers and considered it a snack....don't
beat yourself up too much. ;)

I don't know how often you eat hamburger, but that is one of the FEW things
I have trouble with. My DH and I went to McDonalds a couple days ago and
from the first bite I knew I was in trouble. It happened again last nite on
a home cooked patty. Some days it works for me, others it is an ordeal and
I never know which until it is too late. Call your dr, but chances are you
have just irritated your pouch. And next time get the chicken or fish! LOL
