Question:
Does anyone not dump at all???
I am about six months post-op RNY. I have to admit I have been kind of testing the waters a little. I have never really had any problems with sugar from the start. I tried a piece of bananna bread the other day & no dumping at ALL!! Is that possible? Does anyone not dump at all? The worst thing I will get is maybe some gas & very rarely I'll get mild diarrhea but it is totally tolerable. This is not good for me because I have a big sweet tooth. Just wondering if anyone had experienced this? — Allison T. (posted on September 26, 2002)

Hi Allison~~
I had surgery almost 10 weeks ago and have NEVER been nauseous nor have I
ever dumped! Like you, I will maybe have extra gas or a little diahrea, but
nothing that the average WLS person has. It bothers me at times, because,
even though my eating has changed, my head knows I can have anything. The
FEAR of sabotaging myself keeps me from eating the bad stuff. I have lost
approximately 35-40 pounds so far but for some reason, I think it should be
more. Some say I'm "lucky" to not have to experience dumping, but
sometimes, I wish I could to ward off certain foods.
I went into this knowing everything, but didn't know I'd NEVER get sick---
It's a big test and now it's time for me to prove to myself that the
surgery is doing it's part and now I have to do mine! =)
Take care!

I think the "mild diarrhea" you referred to IS a mild form of
dumping. At least I know I used to get that when I ate something with too
much fat in it (not sugar). Banana Nut bread is rather high in fat content
(I think).

I am 15months post op and have never dumped. I have lost 155lbs (in
10months), 5'4" and 120lbs. I am at goal weight.
THANKS to GOD!! But I will tell you, I have done everything my doctor told
me and I also have not had any sugar. I only eat sugar free foods. So it
is possible not to dump but I do eat correctly!! If you want to meet goal
and not be sick, please stick to proper eating!! Good Luck!!//Candiss

About 30% of all RNY patients don't dump according to the literature that I
have read. Me personally??? I haven't tried sugar because I am afraid
that I am one of those 30% *G*...JR (open RNY 07/17 -84#)

Ok I am 11 months post-op. I am not one who doesn't test the waters I do
its in my nature!!! You tell me no I will do it anyway. Yes I have had
sugars I have had fried food No I do not totally dump no occasionally If I
maybe eat a whole cupcake (oh my gosh!!!) I will get a little tired. But it
goes away. Doesn't happen all of the time. I have lost 110 pounds not quite
at goal. But, if you find that you are cheating too much... just remember
why you had the surgery, and are you at a weight you feel comfortable???
Are you don't loosing ( for your self)? Your own goal weight. If the answer
is NO then go back to water water water and protein first... yada yada I
know you know what to do... Cheating?? It's only human nature no body
perfect..

I am 4 mo post-op and down 89 lbs and have never dumped. I have tested my
sugar tolerance and can eat everything i have tried. I have never misused
my ability to eat sugar but feel I am quite lucky to be able to have a
little taste if I want to. I keep my before picture with me at all times
and look at it often to always remember where I dont want to be ever again.
Good Luck and God Bless

I think there are many forms of dumping and many levels of dumping
tolerance. I have a very high tolerance...even if I start to feel tummy
cramps or get mild diareah, it will not stop me from trying to eat
something I probably should not. Ok now I am going to be really gross here
to make a point. Last week a friend of mine told me about how good the
blue bell double banana fudge sicle was and lil ol me just had to have one.
Man it was heaven on a stick...well that night I had the most embarrasing
moment of my entire life...I pooped in my bed.. dunno how...dunno why...but
I woke up it was too late. Thank God it happened at home...and that will
teach me to think I am totally "dump exempt".

I am 5 months out and have never dumped. I have never gotten the sweats or
upset stomach that other people have gotten but I did feel fatigued after
eating a cup of ice cream once. I really don't eat very much sugar, so
maybe I'm a bad example.

I've never dumped. The most sugar I've had at one time is in a slimfast
bar which has about 24 grams. I felt slightly nauseus after eating it, but
that's about it

I never dump either (4 months post). I stay away from the sweets because I
had a sweet tooth also. But now, I'll have like 2 squares of chocolate
when my daughter is having a candy bar. Or a few (like 3) M&M's.
That's it though, I dont want to get back in to old habits. But I never
dump. The only thing that makes me want to throw up is when I eat
something too fast and it gets stuck!
