Question:
How come I can tolerate beef jerky but not chicken or pork?
How do I get all my protein in if the meats are limited? I've ordered some protein shakes but they haven't arrived yet, I am 6 weeks post op, -27 lbs. — jojo63 (posted on September 17, 2002)

Hi Colleen,
This is very frustrating at first. All I can say is do your best. Keep
trying the different meats. I still can not tolerate much chicken, but do
great with steak. Others are the opposite...go figure. And I have had to
learn how to cook meats a certian way- so they are nice and moist. Try fish
also, that is well tolerated at first.

I too could eat Beef Jerky but not chicken. Chicken and bread would tie my
stomach up in knots. Actually I generaly could eat KFC's chicken (I like
thighs). I don't recall when I could start eating chicken again as it was
VERY GRADUAL. However I'm 16 months out and have been able to eat it for
around the last 4-6 months. But as far as Beef Jerky, I started eating that
8 days post op. Hold in there!
I'm guessing that you will eventually be able to eat chicken and pork
again.

I agree with the others that you should try things again at a later time. I
was lactose intolerant from the beginning, but tried milk again this past
week and no problem! Quite a relief there since I'm wanting to use up all
the No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast I stocked up on before
surgery. I also have a lot of trouble with chicken, especially the breast
meat....talk about pain. Only 2x I have vomited was due to chicken. Steak
also doesn't sit well with me yet. Hang in there, it'll get better. Good
Luck - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -66lbs.
