Question:
question for diabetics. . .
Are there any diabetics out there who, AFTER having this surgery, still needed to take medication or insulin? I am so hoping that I won't have to. I've read where many people no longer need their meds, but I'd like to know if there is a good percentage that still do. Thanks. — Kathy S. (posted on September 11, 2002)

Hi Kathy... I am not diabetic but had worked with people with diabetes in
my prev. position. A lot depends on your type of Diabetes. If you have
had it for many years, since childhood for instance, chances are it will
not deter your need for insulin but will in general make you healthier. If
you have adult onset, chances are very good that with the diet change and
weight loss you may be able to eliminate this. I know of MANY who have.
But your Dr./Endocrinologist is the one who needs to monitor you, do your
periodic HBA1Cs to see how you are fairing. My best to you.

I am a diabetic and so is my husband. We both had open
rny's in 2001. I have lost 105 lbs and he has lost 215 lbs.
Before surgery I was giving myself 5 shots of insulin a day
plus taking 3 glucophage and 2 tolazmide a day. He was
taking 2 glucophage and 2 tolazmide a day. We both not take
NOTHING!!!!!!!! Our sugar levels are normal. We both feel
so much better. We hope you have the same wonderful results!!

Hi Kathy, I had surgery Feb. 2001, at that time I was takeing 2 shots of
insulin plus 5 glipizide and 4 glouphsage (can't spell it). I now chek my
reading each morning and take 1 gilipizide if the reading is over 140.
That happens about twice a week. I have not lost as much, to date, as many
others only 80lbs. I'm not done yet - but I feel I could win the plateau
award!
