Question:
Do those with Distal RNYs have smelly BMs like bpd or DSers?
Aetna pays for the distal RNY. I was wondering if those that have that have the same difficulty with smelly BMs like DS and BPD people have. — Julie F. (posted on September 9, 2002)

At 180cm bypassed, some may consider me distal - I don't really know for
sure. Even if it's not, it'd still be a long proximal. Either way, no - I
do not have particularly stinky BMs.

I can't answer your question about a distal RNY but I wanted to point out
that not all BPD or BPD/DS have smelly BM. Early on many people have this
but for most by 6 months at the latest this resolves itself as your body
adjusts to the surgery. Besides whose BM's smell good before surgery.
Personally, I wouldn't let this issue determine which surgery you chose.
And I know there is a least person who was able to fight Aetna and get them
to pay for the DS so if you decided it's the surgery for you it's possible
to get them to pay.

I don't think that ANYONE has BM's that smell good. If this really bothers
you you can flush as you go. Or carry a can of OZIUM around with you. Good

Much depends on food choices. Eat lots of beans and you will know what I
mean.

I have seen this question soooo many times before and have just passed
right on by. But now I feel compelled to answer. If you think about
it.......all BM's are smelly. If you have had surgery or not, BM's
stink!!! It all depends on your diet.....surgery or not!! I guess I just
dont get it. I dont mean anything by this post, but, come on!!

Depends on common channel length. Someone with a tiny short common channel
will have more "fragrant" emissions than someone with a longer
common channel--more time to process the food. Not too many docs do a true
distal, though, so your chances are slim.

Lori and Robert, I am with you 100%!! Who has wonderful smelling gas and
bowel movements?

Come on you guys, cut her some slack! I think whats she's asking is if her
bowel movements are now going to run the rest of her family out of the
house! I would be concerned about that also. Nobody smells like a rose, but
there are VAST differences in the odors of BM's from person to person. I
lived with a SMELLY for years....it was just his makeup....anyway I
validate your concern, no question is too trivial. MOST sprays just make it
smell like you s--t in a pine forest.....= )~ Now don't anybody get mad
over this....

Hi Julie, I do know what you mean. I cannot use the the bathroom off of our
bedroom in the morning, cause my hubby can't use it for at least an hour
after. My BM's didn't use to have such an offending odor, but NOW!!!! I am
not sure what the cause is, but I am just trying to be thoughtful of my
family, and use a bathroom not going to be needed soon, and keep my fingers
crossed that this too will pass!!
I am 10 weeks out and have lost 51 pounds!!! Tell your family that it is
worth it to have a healthy you.

hi,i have heard that taking the drops called bean o help with
this problem. there is an enzyme in them that the intestens are
lacking at some point due to surgery and it can be taken
several times a day up to 3x the amount for a normal person.
of course always consult your surgeon. take care, kimberly

Yes, I had really stinky gas and bowel movements. My doctor told me to buy
a cheap probiotic and to take 1 capsule x7 days
then he give me a box of rifaximin 200mg and to also take 1
pill x7 days. I can tell you that it worked wonders, ask your Dr. about it
