Question:
How long do I need off of work after a LAP Roux-en-Y
I am planning on a LAP Roux-en-Y, I generally recover from things well and quickly. Provided I am able to have this done as a Lap. How long will I need to be off of work. I dont do any lifting, and do walk some at work, but can also sit when needed. I was hoping to only take off 2 weeks- 14 days...is that realistic? Thanks All — Keniki B. (posted on August 29, 2002)

Mostly because of boredom I returned to work part time just over a week. @
weeks LAP will probably be fine. Just tell your employeer you might need
more time just in case, or may be able to eturn part time a boit sooner.
Try to give yourselsek some options.

I went back to work (office environment)in a week and I also had an
umbilical hernia repair done at the same time.

I had Open RNY with gall bladder removal and hernia repair and returned to
work in two weeks with no problems at all. Of course, everyone heals at
their own pace and each person's pain tolerance is different. I found the
recovery to be much easier than with my C-Section.

I tried to go back to work at 2 weeks, but was too tired. I had no problems
recovering from the actual surgery, and had very little pain at all, but it
took nearly 3 weeks before I actually felt like I was able to function
without a nap. I ended up taking 3.5 weeks off from work and that was fine
for me.

I went back to work on the 18th day after surgery, and probably could have
gone back sooner... BUT... I was totally exhausted, I mean bone-weary,
borderline falling asleep driving home at the end of the day, tired. It is
now day 22, and I feel great, and have no problems, but I've upped my b-12,
and of course, each day that passes it gets better. If your company is
flexible enough, you might consider planning to go back half time first,
building back up to full time over the course of a week or so. Let your
body be your guide. I know by day 12 I was stir-crazy wanting to get out
of my house, and DO something during the day.

I go back to work on the 3rd of Sept and I feel like I still need more time
off. The 3rd will be 2 days shy of 4 weeks off. I do work in an office and
I sit all day but I have no energy and still have some pain from the
surgery but my doc won't give me anymore time off work so I kinda have to
go back. I'm hoping it won't be as bad as I'm imagining once I return. I
had never had any surgeries before LAP RNY so this was very painful for me.
I've just now gotten off my pain meds so the pain is very different for
everybody. If you generally recovery quickly then 2 weeks will probably be
sufficient time off for you. I know several people that have gone back in
1-2 week time period and were fine. I'd listen to the others and ask for 2
weeks off but tell them you might need more. Good luck in your journey!

I took two weeks off, but wish I had taken three. I was tired and came home
and took a 2-3 hour nap every day.
