Question:
Trouble getting enough fiber after WLS
After researching this subject for so long I am wondering if there is trouble getting enough fiber after surgery, given how other foods get 'stuck'. I would appreciate feedback. thanks. — deespol (posted on August 9, 2002)

From my experience, fiber and foods "getting stuck" are two
different things. First, fiber is not an issue for us. We need to focus
on protein/carbs/liquids. Second, I've found that food "gets
stuck" when either I don't chew well enough, or I've eaten a meal
before the previous one has worked its way through the new system.
Elimination changes after the surgery- you might want to keep a record for
yourself to get a broader picture of how things are going.

Our last support group meeting was all about this. It is important to get
fiber to stay regular; especially when taking iron. You must get in a lot
of water though to flush the fiber through. Also, don't start eating 50g
of fiber. Gradually increase your fiber intake. Like the previous poster
said, protein is the focus but you do need other things as well. Products
like garbanzo beans have a huge amount of protein and fiber; more bang for
the buck. It's really important long term post op to eat more well
rounded... If you'd like more info about the fiber, email me and I'll send
you some points that the nutritionist gave us.

Denise, I eat about a cup of popcorn several times a week. Its the best
fiber out there-keeps ya very regular!! Nutritionist suggested it.

Boy do I know the importance of fiber. I was up 3 hrs last night with
SEVERE stomach cramps. I thought I was going to have to go to the
hospital. My doctor called me back and told me I needed to eat more fiber
and drink more water. My original surgeon told me to take MOM and not eat
anything high in fiber. I switched Doctors and this one had a fit when I
told him I was taking MOM and not eating fiber. Every Doctor is different.
It is scary. One tells you one thing and another tells you something
different. My advice on fiber and laxatives is this: Use good judgement.
I thought taking MOM was addictive, but I listened to the first Doctor.
Now I may be addicted. I hope I havent ruined my system now. Food getting
stuck is very different. I crushed a pill and it got stuck in my pouch
opening. Man did that hurt. I had to get sick to get it up. It was a
hormone pill..I switched to the patch till I could swallow better...

I've been one of the very lucky ones who's had very little side effects and
no real complications. However the constipation/fiber issue is a biggie
with me. I have had a number of occasions where I felt I would be heading
to the ER to get some relief. But with the help of glycerin suppositories
and some Colace, I have gotten "cleaned out." Now to maintain I
am adding fiber to my diet DAILY. And popcorn each day wasn't enough for
me! I now start my day off with either oatmeal or Grape Nuts cereal and am
feeling regular without the aid of a suppository. Whew! What a relief that
is! Good Luck! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -100lbs.

p.s. WATER is the #1 aid in this department. Insufficient water intake will
tighten things up big time! Pardon the graphics, but your stool needs water
to pass easily.
