Question:
Will weight training pre-op help me with saggy skin post-op?
I'm planning on having surgery (hopefully) in October or November. I'm thinking about starting to work out with weights now. I know that doing so has health benefits and will help my recovery, but my question, specifically, is will it help me avoid sagging skin? Thanks to all... — Tamara K. (posted on August 7, 2002)

Weight training has MANY benifits and it would be good to continue it.
However I don't see how it would help you advoid sagging skin. Your skin is
already streched out and toning your muscles is'nt going to change that.
But I wish I had done weight training pre op. You've got the right idea!

I don't know if that was the reason, but I did work out with weights and
don't have any significant hanging skin. Sure, it's loose but not HANGING.
I am starting to work out with weights again and am very excited because
now I can actually SEE the muscles grow and hopefully they will fill some
of the loose skin. I think it also helped me right after surgery cuz I was
strong enough to lift myself without using my sore tummy muscles. Good
luck!

I think the answer to your question depends on you, and your body! I have
worked out, cardio and weight lifting 5 days a week since last August. I
had a tummy tuck performed in April, and my breast and arms done a week and
a half ago. My arms hung down like pieces of fabric. It did not matter
how much weight I lifted, I simply couldn't fill the empty cavity. I will
have my legs fixed next year. Truly, I think time will tell, whether the
weight lifting can help fill the area out or not. Additionally, I think
how much you have to lose and your age really play into this scenario. I
hope this helps.
