Question:
Frustrated, almost 4 months post-op RNY & have lost about 70 lbs. Is this normal?
Don't get me wrong I'm thrilled with any weight loss compared to what I was doing before. I'm not complaining either BUT I thought by now I would have lost a little more weight. I'm just a little frustrated right now. Is 70 lbs. in 4 months normal post-op RNY? I guess I just need a little guidance & encouragement! Thanks! — Allison T. (posted on August 5, 2002)

My doctor guesstimates that you will lose 20-30 lbs. your first month and
then slow down to 10 lbs. a month until you get about 30 lbs. from goal.
Then you have to work like hell for those last 30 lbs!!! Sounds like
you're doing fine so far. Don't get down on yourself.

I am 5 1/2 months post op, open RNY and have lost 83 lbs. Everyone loses at
a different rate. I was constantly comparing my weight loss with that of
others at first, but realized I had to stop doing that. People who aren't
quite as heavy when they have surgery will lose slower than someone who is
heavier. I've never lost this much weight in 5 months on any other method
I've tried so I am very happy with my progress. One other thing is that
there may be weeks when you don't actually lose pounds but you are losing
inches. Congratulations on your weight loss....70 lbs in 4 months is
fantastic!

Allison ~ you are doing great! Come on...when have you lost 73lbs in just
4mo before? Are you feeling better? With that kind of loss I'm sure you
must notice a difference in your clothes by now. If you are feeling down
then get moving by getting in some more exercise and drinking more water.
That always jump-starts my losing. Don't worry, you are doing great! ~

Allison, it depends on what you started at. Those with alot to lose, lose
much faster than the lightweights. I think 70 in 4 months is awesome-took
me almost 6 months to get to 70. Isn't it wonderful?

Everyone loses at different rates, it depends how much you had to loose to
begin with and a variety of other things. I think you are doing
phenominal! I will be 6 months post-op next week and have only lost 85
lbs, I am consistently losing 2lbs per week. By my 6 month anniversary, I
should be at about 90lb loss with a goal of losing 150lbs. Email me at
[email protected], if you'd like to talk more about it. Believe me
I know how you feel, it seems like you'll never make it to goal especially
when you read about people who make it to goal at 6 months. Best of luck!
Remember water + protein + exercise = lbs lost.

Everyone loses at a different rate. I've lost 84 pounds in 4 and a half
months. So you're on average. Don't compare your losses to everyone else.
That's the first bad move. So just relax and enjoy your loss. And stop
worrying over if it's enough or too little :)

I am also 4 1/2 months out and I lost 69 pounds. When I am at a plateu I
just tell myself that my body is getting use to all the muscle I am
building and when its time the pounds will come off. Today I am wearing my
first pair of 14 dress pants since I was in high school (12 year ago). I
am wearing 14/16 now and I feel wonderful. Keep going it will come off.
My personal goal is only 40 more lbs away. Thats great compared to 110
lbs. away. Good luck and God Bless.

Hi Allison... I am just 4 months post op and have lost 66#. I too was
discouraged until I realized, I am at the lowest weight in over 15 years, I
went from a size 34 to a 24, I have a neck, I can wipe my butt easily, sex
is great, I feel great and my health is so improved. At times I think I
can eat too much but then realize it is more than 2/3 less than I did
before or more. So I've now come to the realization that I'm right on
course (and my Dr. thinks so also)Any time I feel like I'm not on track, I
push the protein more, water more, get in more exercise and cut carbs. The
difference now is that I am in control on a much better level. My best to
you -- You're doing great!

By 4 months, I'd lost 61#. I had 150 to lose (which was me + my dog &
all 4 cats), so I was not a lightweight. We all lose a different speeds.
You're doing GREAT!

I saw my surgeon for my 6 months check up today. I've lost 67 pounds --
started at 350. I was annoyed to say the least, but the nurse told me that
8 pounds a month at this point is "average". So I think you're
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the game.

I will be 4 months on Sept 17th and so far I've lost 70 lbs. I went from
278 lbs to 208 lbs as of last Friday(my weigh-in day) I average just over 4
lbs a week, which is completely thrilling to me.
