Question:
Update me on Al Roker is he having serious complications?
I don't watch the Today show much, but I did hear that Al had WLS I also heard that he is having some serious complications from it. Can anyone fill me in - I'm nosey Rosey, or should I just pick up an Enquirer? Thanks! — Anne F. (posted on July 29, 2002)

I don't know the answer either but I have noticed that Al has dropped a lot
of weight recently. He looks good and healthy so I hope he is fine. His
wife did just have a baby boy. It's always interesting when you see a
public person losing weight quickly as I wonder if they have had WLS. If AL
has, I hope he decides to talk about it on the show as I think people in
the public eye (like Carnie) show the rest of us that this can be an option
for us.

Anne, My mom watches Al Roker every morning, and loves him to death. He
did have WLS in March, and all of his efforts to keep it quiet failed. He
has been on "maternity" leave with his wife this last week, but
was back this morning. Mom said he acted tired, but she assumed it was
from the new baby. He's a really sweet guy, I hope all is well.

Actually he has been in the Enquirer, whether he liked it or not, I guess.
It mentioned he had a slow start to weight loss with some problems. But
heck, we've ALL had some kind of problems..big or little.

Al probably just took some time off work to celebrate the birth of his new
baby and to be with his wife? Complications? I doubt it seriously. After
all, he most likely had the BEST surgeon, most likely has the BEST cook and
most likely has the BEST counselors and BEST trainers around. I wish him
well on his journey. He's looking great. And....he should talk about it
only when and IF he wants to. It's his body/his business. Who knows,
maybe he's working on a book. I know from my point of view, I didn't want
to talk about my surgery in case it didn't work. I didn't want to
elaborate on another attempt at weight loss that didn't work. But it has!
Yippee!

actually al had the lapband surgery, not rny

In reference to his "slow start with weight loss":
If he did indeed have the lap band, this slow start would make sense and
not be a bad thing. With lap bands, no weight loss is expected until after
the first fill-which can take place 4-8 weeks after the surgery. The
pre-fill time is for healing, not weight loss. Many people do lose weight
then but if so, that's just a bonus.
It's not like the RNY, where a person just starts losing rapidly
immediately. The weight loss with the lap band is much more slow, anyway.
I wonder what the article meant by "slow start." Is it because
he didn't lose 90 lbs in 6 months or something, like some do with other
weight loss surgeries? The lap band is completely different. Rapid weight
loss is NOT the goal.

I had sent an email to Al after hearing he had surgery - before his
response, I had thought he was great! His response to was one of the
rudest email's I have ever rec'd. I had mentioned I heard he had surgery
and hoped in the future he'd go public, because as a nurse (who had an RNY
last summer) I knew the risks obesity both first hand and from a medical
stand point. I even offered when the time was right, if he needed other
people to come forward I would. I feel that this surgery must be spoken
about more so others will not have to self pay like I did (I have
insurance, they just don't cover WLS.)

OMG Krista, Did the e-mail come directly from Al himself? That is such a
shock to hear. He seems so nice.

I'm nosey rosey too. Krista, what did he say? I can't imagine he would be
rude but hey, his smilin' face on tv is just for tv maybe???? I saw him
today and he looks great. The woman on the show (can't remember her name)
even complimented him on the way he looked at Asbury Park without his
jacket. He just laughed. Well, every one has a right to privacy. Maybe
he doesn't want to share. Being a public figure and a MAN they are like
that. We girls, just like to share! LOL!

I got nosey too. Nothing on NBC.com BUT I did find something at
http://wxnet4.nbc4.com/celebritychatter/1527275/detail.html Since that's
an NBC affiliate, you wouldn't think they could get away with making any
statements that involved WLS and Rokor but they really appear to be quoting
Sharon Osbourne so who knows. I found nothing anywhere else that confirms
or denies. But like the other posters, he is entitled to his privacy. He
won't tell unless he wants to and that's just fine. Nelly

Sad he is ashamed or embarassed. WLS is a necessary medical procedure that
saves lives. Would he be embarased to get his appendix out?
