Question:
Does anyone know how many calories per day we are supposed to have?
No one can pin point how many calories a person is supposed to have 2,4,6 months to a year out etc..I am 9months out and down 103lbs, I had the Roux-en-y gastric bypass. Any information is greatly appreciated..Thank you.. — Laura M. (posted on July 9, 2002)

My nutritionist said by the time you are eating regularly you should be
around 1000-1100 but I have also heard lower numbers (like 800). You should
go see a nutritionist if you haven't recently, especially one that has
experience with gastric bypass (mine has lots).

Mine says 1000-1200 cals/day. When I was doing that much I quit losing.
After 6 weeks of no weight loss, I started doing fitday.com, analyzed my
caloric needs, took it down to 800/day, and started losing again.
Everyones caloric needs will be different. You will just have to play with
the numbers to see what is best for you. 8 mo post, 15ish to goal.

My nutritionist told me something that makes a lot of sense to me: It's
not the number of calories you eat that get you in the end; it's the type
of calories you consume!
Think about it, if you eat a diet high in starchy carbs (potatoes are a
great example...very low in calories, but very high in carbs) and keep to
1000 calories a day you aren't likely to lose weight and may even gain. If
however you eat the same 1000 calories but make it 99% protein and
non-starchy carbs (green veggies and low-sugar fruits) you should lose
weight and feell full longer. Just something to think about. Oh and he
recommends the 1000 a day of protein and non-starchy carbs.
