Question:
I have a pain right in my rib cage on my right side. What could this be?
I am about 3 months post-op RNY. Today I started with a sharp pain around my rib cage area on my right side. I've never had this before. It doesn't feel like gas pain. What else could it be? — Allison T. (posted on July 8, 2002)

Check with your surgeon. Don't wait it out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Do you have your gallbladder still? When I had my (horrific I might add)
second attack, I thought sure I was having a heart attack. It started at
the ribs and radiated to the back. Hurt to lie down, sit up, take a breath
and anything I tried didn't make it go away. I had a sonogram in the er and
they did emergency removal. A stone was blocking a duct. OUCH. Good luck to
you.

I am only 5 weeks post-op and experience similar pains, especially ones
that radiated to my back, liek the previous poster said. My surgeon said it
was too early for me for it to be gallbladder, but i don't think it could
be for you at 3 months. We are losing weight very quickly, so it is a
possibility, ofcourse, unless you do not have yours anymore! I would call
your doctor! I was put on ACTIGALL to prevent gallstones and any future
gallbladder problems for 6 months! goodluck to you, i know it can be so
painful!

I just spent the day in the emergency room with the same problem.
VERRRRRRRRy severe pain. I found out I now have gallstones and might need
my gallbladder removed. Get it checked out with your doctor. I am 16 months
post-op so this can come up at any time when morbid obesity is involved and
massive weight loss. Good luck!

I have the same pains. I had my gallbladder checked out and it was fine.
My docter feels that I am eating too fast or too much at one time. I get
it after I eat or drink but not all the time. I have made an effort to
slow down my eating and drinking and it seems to help sometimes. Good
Luck.

I have this same problem only in the morning though. It is not my
gallbladder because I had that removed last year. I have noticed if I
drink a glass of water before I go to bed the pain is not there in the
morning. Good Luck
