Question:
I need a Good / Bad food list.
I had Open RNY 2 months ago. My Dr. gave me a food list that is VERY strict. Can someone give me a list that there Dr. uses? For example my Dr. doesn't allow any soup, carrots, peas, potatoe, breads, pasta etc. I need more lists to compare. — Janet H. (posted on July 7, 2002)

Wow is that ever strict. And I thought mine was bad. I had an open rny on
6/11/02 at the Bariatric treatment center. They have a complete
nutritional program all set up in a binder. As of 5 weeks post op you can
move to soft foods, which is anything without hard pieces or nuts or seeds.
At 6 weeks, you can then eat regular foods again but need to watch high
fat foods and not eat foods containing added sugar. I am soooo looking
forward to week 5.

I think that you should trust your Dr. He's supposed to not only have your
nutrition in mind but also your healing. After all you trusted your life
in his hands so now even though you don't agree with it trust him with your
diet. Good Luck

Janet, at 2 months, we were on solid food-anything we wanted to eat, just
chew it to mush. I can remember eating salad at 2 months, no crunchy
vegetables. I did alot of tuna fish salad, soft crab meat and shrimp, and
crab cakes, grilled salmon. As for breads, I did a tiny bit of whole wheat
bread, but not much. I found tortilla/burrito type shells easier to digest
and I would make burritos with cheese and shredded meat/beans in them and
eat a few bites for a meal. Scrambled eggs with melted cheese were an
every day breakfast for me-add a dollop of salsa or veggie chili to the egg
for a different flavor. Pasta is OK too, its soft and just slides down,
but its filling and I limit myself to just a few bites, and after I have
had a few bites of protein first.
Your doctor sounds pretty restrictive-I have seen a few others with the
same restrictions. My nutritionist says you have to make carbs a part of
your diet to have a healthy well balanced diet, just keep it in small
proportions and pick the complex carbs (whole grains) and not the simple
ones(sugars, white breads..).

We do no milk, no sugar for life. As far as texture, it's 4 weeks clear,
plus protein supp (no milk or sugar, though), then 2 weeks soft food, and
on into real food, but only adding 1 new item per day to test drive it.

Here's my diet, direct from my surgeon, Yes strict, but you get used to it.
This is the same plan that Dr. Wittgrove of Carnie Wilson fame uses-- First
month: Good: tuna, chicken, cott. cheese, turkey, fat free yogurt, refried
beans, string cheese, tofu, split pea or bean soup, any fish---all chewed
very well. Eat more fish use the beans, pea soup for variety once in
awhile. Bad: Anything else!!! Includes any breads, crackers, cereals or
sugar especiallY! Second-fourth month, add vegetables and fruits but only
after eating protein. Let me know if this diet is similar to the one you
have! Good luck!

Please explain to me about the protein? What role is it playing in the
diet? I am 2 Weeks post-op. I really feel like I'm winging it to a point.
Post-op, the protein drinks are a real turn off to me. Nausiating. I had
some hummus and blended minestroni today.
