Question:
Has anyone post-op been able to stop taking their anti-depressants
Hi Y'all, I have been taking Celexa or some form of anti-depressants for a couple of years, I know a lot of my depression is explained by being over-weight. I'm currently 3 months post-op and 70 lbs down, feeling everyday a little better. Can weight loss cure depression and has anybody been able to stop taking their meds after WLS???? — Diane B. I too was on Celexa for just about a year and a half when I had my wls on
November 16, 2001. I haven't taken it since surgery...and I don't feel the
need to. I am happier than I have been in years. I know a lot of me
depression stemmed from my obesity and my obesity stemmed from
depression...it was a terrible vicious cycle...one that rny has
"cured". But that's me...not everyone. I would not stop taking
your meds without doctor supervision, but, perhaps you could start being
weaned off of it. Take care and good luck.

I think it depends on why you are on anti-depressants in the first place.
If you have sub-clinical depression or situational depression, perhaps in
time you'll be able to go off your anti-depressant. I'm on
anti-depressants for life because I've been dxed with major depression.
And I would love to get rid of my Zoloft and Risperdal (I'm self-pay with
my prescriptions and they're VERY expensive), but no dice in my case.

I was on an antidepressant until 2 weeks prior to surgery. My therapist
tapered me down until I was off at that time. I've not had any since. I
feel fine. Do have a bit of sluggishness now and do hope it's due to low
iron and not the beginning of depression. I don't feel depressed.

I was able to stop my anti depressants soon after surgery. I had been
taking one anti depressant or another for over 10 yrs and stopped about two
weeks post op. I am now 17 months post op and the only pills I take are BC
and vitamins.

I find I CANNOT take my zoloft; when I try to take it after I cut it in
half it burns my stomache. I tried the liquid for all of 2 days, and I
don't think I have EVER tasted anything so awful. I am 1 month post-op,
and sadly I feel like I am sinking into depression again. I guess it
depends on if your depression is weight related.

I havebeen taking Zoloft for about 2 years and I have spoken to other WLS
friends that take various anti-depression meds and we are all in the same
boat....we still need them! I only take a 1/2 a pill at a time, but it
truly keeps me on an even keel. I tried wean my self off and I was a
raving total lunatic! LOL Also, I take mine at night with my previcid so
it doesn't upset my stomach.
