Question:
Is this dumping?

I spent last night sicker than the proverbial dog, and I don't know why. I started feeling squiffy about 7:00 p.m., and felt miserable 'til about 9:00 a.m. I felt nauseated, gaseous, hot-and-cold, feverish and dizzy and had lower back pain. This sounds like descriptions of dumping I've read, but (a) I didn't think dumping lasted for over 12 hours, and (b) I ate not one particle of sugar yesterday, except what was already in the foods themselves. I can tell you exactly what I ate yesterday: a protein shake, a handful of peanuts, some string cheese and a couple of crackers, another handful of peanuts, and two barbecued ribs. There was probably a small amount of sugar in the barbecue sauce, but I was starting to feel bad even before I ate the ribs. My question is: what happened? Can dumping really last for 14 hours? My surgeon says one doesn't dump from excess fat, but I know a lot of people here disagree.    — Roxanne M. (posted on June 10, 2002)

No, what you're experiencing is not dumping. Many people call any symptoms of being sick, 'dumping'. Dumping is a result of eating refined sugar. However, there are a number of other things that can cause us to be sick, eating too fast or too much,, for example. It sounds like you need to call your doc to find out what's going on.

Yep...your surgeon is wrong. You can dump on fat! In fact, I dump way more on fat than on sugar. Were the ribs very fatty?

I feel concerned about your back pain, and that doesn't sound like a dumping symptom. Plus, you started not feeling good before you even ate the ribs, and dumping shouldn't last that long. I've been suffering with lower back pain and abdominal pain for many weeks now. If it happens again, I would definitely talk to your doctor right away. It could be your gallbladder or pancreatitis. Good luck!
