Question:
Any suggestions on what type of alcoholic drinks are best in the beginning
I am just a little curious what types of alcoholic drinks might be best when you are post-op. I am only weeks post-op and I am not planning on drinking now, but would like to in the next few weeks. — Lisa V. (posted on May 28, 2002)

hmm...let's see. I am 8 and 1/2 months out (about) and I haven't really
had much alcohol....I had a sip (a tiny sip at that) of my friend's vodka
tonic -- IT BURNED for 15 minutes! YUCK! I also tasted a friend's
beer...YUCK too much carbonation feeling....and I got a very strong buzz
from a 1/2 glass of redwine...which was yummy - so just be CAREFUL....you
will not be able to have a drink like you did prior to surgery...don't be
the driver if you know you will be having even 1 drink.

Please be careful....I was told that alcohol moves through our new systems
quickly and is hard on the liver. I can't imagine a little would hurt. I
got loopy so fast pre-op, I can't imagine how it would affect me now. :)

I am just over 6 months post-op and have tried a few different cocktails.
I know they are high in calories/sugar and are really hard on our bodies,
but, I also know that I am a young single woman, with a social life! I
have found that absolute gimmlets are the best choice for me. I do however
make sure they don't use the sweetned lime juice, rather lime slices.
Also, I have tried beer, red wine, absolute and cranberry juice (diluted
juice) and rum daquari (crystal light makes a mix). I will agree that
alcohol hits me faster, however, I have gone out several times, had a
couple drinks and was fine.
Just my opinion........good luck!

I am just about 6 months out, and every few weekends, I go out with some
friends. I do drink a little and have been since about 4.5 months out. I
find I do get drunk fast, but I don't think it goes away faster like some
people here have said. I drink vodka and orange juice only and have never
had a problem. If anything, maybe I don't get a hangover because I process
it all out quickly. I do make sure that I drink extra the next day so I
don't get dehydrated. I say give it a try, but just like everything else
you put in your mouth now, in moderation.

I've had alcohol exactly one time since surgery four months ago. At a 50th
wedding anniversary for my parents, I had 2 small glasses of champagne.
Boy was I feeling no pain!! It does hit you harder, so be careful. And
remember, alot of mixes, cream drinks, frozen drinks have sugar in them.
