Question:
I just foung out today after having an upper G.I. done, that I have a Hiatal Hernia.
(Boy, now I know where all my heartburn has been coming from!!)Is this something the Doc could fix while he is doing the WLS? Does anyone think this will be a problem for me getting surgery? or will this just be another co-morb. to add to my list? — blank first name B. (posted on May 20, 2002)

I had one of those too which the surgeon did not know about until he saw it
while performing a lap RNY. Unfortunately with lap he could not fix it. 5
days later, my bowel kinked and was sucked into the hernia. Result was
alot of pain and a 2nd surgery, this one open, 6 days after the lap RNY.
Would be nice if you could get it taken care of at the same time!

I had a large hernia prior to surgery, It is a co-morbid. I had an open
RNY, 5/9. It was fixed due to the surgery. I am off of prevacid, no
heartburn, nausea at all since surgery. Doing just great! Tricia

I had open RNY on 4/5/02 along with a hiatal hernia repair. I didn't even
know I had one until a week after surgery when I saw my surgeon. This
should be something they can fix at the time of surgery, and yes I would
think it would be considered a co-morbidity. Good Luck!

Haven't had surgery yet, but do to my heartburn, the Dr. wants me scoped so
he has a better view of where everything is. He will fix white he's in
there. Just think, it's better this way, less surprises for him to
encounter while he's in there.
