Question:
Is it possible not to dump at all????
I had lap RNY 4/10/02 & don't seem to dump at all. Is this possible? I tried a cookie today & it seemed to have no effect on me at all!! This is NOT GOOD because I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas! What can I do to avoid eating sweets? I cannot seem to get rid of that sweet tooth of mine. I still crave things something aweful!!! Any insight? — Allison T. (posted on May 18, 2002)

I have only dumped maybe two or three times in the past 13 months. So it
is possible I suppose. But it hinders your progress if you continually
test what you can and cannot have.

Have you tried some of the SF sweets out there? They really are good.
Murray's makes some wonderful cookies when you just have to have them.
They have peanut butter, oatmeal, cream filled (like Oreos) chocolate fudge
to name a few. They still have a lot of fat, so you have to plan them into
your eating plan. Healthy Choice makes a wonderful Mint Chocolate Chip ice
cream as well as Vanilla. I think they have a couple other flavors that
are SF, they just aren't available in my small town. Do yourself a favor
and check these out. You don't want to get into the habit of eating sugar
and jepordize your weight loss early on. We need to change our eating
habits to have sucess with this surgery. Remember.........it is a tool,
not a magic cure.

I tested the crap out of how much sugar I could have. I know...bad me. In
the beginning I knew I could have about 12-15grams of sugar before I would
start to have ill feelings. That ammount is greater now that several
months have past. One cookie wouldnt hurt me either...but two..watch out.
I hate to offer this kind of advice, but maybe you should have two and see
how awful it feels. Honestly, dumping is the best way to curb that sweet
tooth! I dont want sweet things anymore, and sweets were my downfall.

Me too:) The most I ever got was a tiny ill feeling eating multiple sugary
things. This is a blessing and a curse, but see my profile I have lost over
130 pounds. So dont dispair, just be careful.

Fellow (recovering?) sweet tooth here! I had an Open RNY on 02/14/02 and
have never experienced dumping. However, the extent of my eating sweets
had been one small cookie (at about 7 weeks) and a Hershey's miniature that
I broke into - I'm not kidding - ten pieces and ate over a period of about
six weeks(hey, sometimes you need that little bit of chocolate in your
mouth). You said you only had one cookie, you may find if you eat more
sweets then you WOULD dump. Personally, I'd rather leave those
"testing how much I can" waters untested. Neither dumping, nor
knowing that I can eat sweets sounds like much fun to me. :)

You are better off not to know what sweets or how much sweets you can
eat,it only makes it harder to stay away from them.Ihad lap gastric bypass
11-2-01 and Ihave never dumped or sick.Iwish Iwould cause I CAN EAT CANDY
,COOKIES OR WHATEVER.Ihad 2 pieces of pecan pie at christmas and never
bother me.except my guilt later.Iconstanly worry about it, but I have lost
102 poundsand it's been 6 months,everyone says I'm doing great even the
dr.As long as I'm loosing I guess I'LL BE OK,BUT YOU SHOULDN'T FIND OUT OR
NOT IF YOU CAN EAT SWEETS IT DOES MAKE IT HARDER. GOOD LUCK NANCY

It is very possible not to dump at all. I am almost 19 months post op and
I have never dumped. I can eat small amounts of absolutely anything.

One cookie is not a test of whether you dump or not. Many post-ops can
have a certain # of grams of sugar without feeling ill, but go over that,
and watch out. I am 3 1/2 months post-op and have not really tested how
far I can go. I have discovered mini bite size cookies, though. A little
snack pack with 10 cookies in it will last me 3 or 4 days-I limit myself to
2 or 3 mini cookies, which has about 5 grams of sugar. Will I dump if I
eat 10 grams? I don't know. I'm just happy that that little bit of sugar
is all I need. So, don't think that your not a dumper. You may be. But
if you can resist testing it, its better.

Hi, Allison. I dumped maybe the first 6 months after my surgery, but this
problem has slowly faded. Now at 14 months post-op, I can eat literally
everything I want (in small quantities) with the exception of fried tofu!

I had a home baked cookie about 6 weeks out and didn't have any problem
with it either. However, when I went and had a SECOND cookie, get out of
my way to the bathroom!!! I spent the next hour in there with horrible
diarrhea and sweats!! There was just too much sugar and that cured me of
EVER having more then one cookie again.

I had lap on 4-9-02 and I have never dumped either. However the only time
I tried something sweet was when I went to a baby shower and had a small
peice of cake. I was scared to death but thought I might as well try.
NOthing happened. So when I went to my doctor that week I ask him why he
said you should feel lucky but, most people dump on liquidy high sugar
things not cakes and cookies in reasonable doses. So anyway I just tell
myself I can't have these things it will make me sick plus I don't buy
them. My kids will get something special once a week but, I don't want the
temptations in the house plus my husband and kids don't need them either.
Good luck 35lbs
