Question:
Sixty-five Percent??

I had RNY LAP. My surgeon says the weight loss could be 65% or more the first six months. This sounds so good I'm afraid to believe it. I know it varies, but what are some of the longer than 6 month postops experience. Thanks for any help.    — Tammy B. (posted on May 3, 2002)

At the six month mark, I was down 85 pounds out of a total of 115 (give or take a few). That's more than 65%, I think. (I'm math handicapped). I've heard people say that you can expect to lose 50% in the first six months and the rest in the remaining 12 months. I lost all my excess weight in 11 months and never really lost after that. I've actually gained a couple. I think that everyone is going to be differnt. I think that it is safe to assume that you'll lose a lot of weight (50%+) during that time.

At six months, I had lost 120# of the 175# I lost over the 12 month period. I think that's about 68%. I'm 2 years post.

I have lost 70% and I am almost 6 months post-op. I started with a 'low' BMI 40, been a slow loser, but really feel successful! Nov '01 RNY, down 75.

I've lost 116 pounds since 9/28/2001 - Today is 5/4/02 so just seven months and one week! It's unbelievable the difference in my life, energy level, and health! Not to mention no more embarrassing fat moments: seat belt extenders with flight attendants waving them like signal flags, movie seats that are so tight I'd wait until everyone left to heave myself out, avoiding restaurant booths like the plague, etc etc. YOU'RE STARTING ON A TOUGH JOURNEY BUT A WONDERFUL ONE. It gets better EVERY DAY! God bless you!! CJ

I've lost very close to half in the first 7 months, but I'm not the fastest loser. I don't exercise like I should either. Still, once the weight started coming off I was happy as can be even with half left to go. I've lost 112 with 118 left and I know I'll get there. good luck

Tammy - I am 9.5 months post op and have lost two-thirds of what I want to lose. I started at 287; am now 192.5, want to get to 150. So, that's 94 down, 43 to go. It's slow (for me) but I'm getting there - and am grateful. Good luck to you. OPEN RNY 7/17/01.

EVERYONE is different. At 6 months I was at 202 pounds down 111 pounds. Fastest my surgeon said he had someone get to goal:) Now I weigh 179. See my profile. Men loose faster. The RNY REALLY works, Some loose faster than others and the overall loss is 80+ percent on average, some lucky folks like me loose it all. Something I never anticipated. YOU can do it too!

I had LAP NY too. It will be 6 months since my surgery on Monday and I'm down 83 pounds or about 70% of my excess weight. So yes, it can be done!

I am 1 week short of 5 months post op and I've lost 66% of my excess body weight. (And shame on me, I haven't really been exercising either.)

I am almost 1 year post op, as of May 25, and I have lost 117 pounds, 6 pounds below my goal. I now weigh 129 pounds, and by 9 months post op I was at my goal weight of 135!! As I went along I thought I wouldn't ever get there, but hard work paid off and I am happier and healthier than ever before. I think everyone varies in their success and amount of time it takes, but if you get into good habits and take good care of your "tool" you can and likely will reach goal! Best of luck...
