Question:
Social Situations...food, food, food every where...how do you deal with it?

I just came home from a social situation where there was yummy food EVERY WHERE! It was killing me to the point where I had to leave. How do you deal with that or what can I do you do to combat it? I can't run forever?    — Allison T. (posted on April 27, 2002)

On stressful days I sometimes resent other people getting to eat the "yummy" stuff ... the things that brought me to have WLS in the first place. You can usually find something you can eat. Don't make eating the main focus on a social situation ... make it talking with friends and meeting new people. If you can't find something that you can eat, then get a glass of water in a wine glass and just circulate. It will get easier with time.

I am 12 days post-op and I have been exposed to food myself and I find it very "painful" but Just think How far you have come...AND remember to "EAT TO LIVE , not LIVE TO EAT"..food isn;t our main focus anymore ..Its makes a difference ..Good Luck ..

Are you still on the very limited portion, like liquids? Since I do food now, I just take small portions of the foods I love (no milk, no sugar), and portions of things I don't like. LOL! Fills up my plate. I eat the things I like/can, and sorta spread the other stuff around my plate.

This surgery is such a great tool. During my "grieving period," I really COULDN'T eat the bad stuff (I dumped too bad). Nowadays, I rarely dump, but my habits have shifted to more healthy choices anyway. I really try to look at food as exactly what it is: fuel. In our culture, it has so many social/cultural implications, but if you break it down into exactly what it is (different mixtures of protein, fat, sugar and vitamins/minerals), then it kind of helps. For example, I might look at a huge breakfast at Denny's and think to myself, "Okay, I only have about 1/2 c. to 1 c. available in my new stomach now (13.5 months post-op). Since I only have limited room, I'm going to eat 1 scrambled egg, 1 sausage and this slice of tomato. That's all that will fit, and it has the best nutrition of anything on this plate. I can pass on the syrupy pancakes and pastries, telling myself, "If you seriously have room after the egg, sausage and tomato, knock yourself out." Works for me every time!!!

Nibble, nibble, nibble. Keep something in your hand, but only what you know YOU can handle. Probably no one will even notice.

Get a large glass of water when you arrive. If you feel funny drinking it put in a lemon and pretend you are drinking a drink. Now try to get in 64oz of water at the party. Challange yourself. If you drink alot you will not have room to eat, --- Good Luck

I do like the rest said, sip water. I also munch on the raw vegetables w/dip. My problem is when I go out to eat wih my family, I feel like after I eat my few bites I have so much time on my hands, I look around the room, ask for a to go box... I just feel so out of place at times...all this time on my hands an they are still eating.. I know eat slower but it doesnt help, and I end up talking , talking talking until they get through.....sometimes I feel like taking a walk until they get done but that wouldnt be fair...
