Question:
Is Tomato Soup Okay 2 weeks Post Op
I read a posting from a woman who's doctor gave her specific instructions to NOT eat tomato soups. I've been eating this for the past 7 days - I hope I haven't done anything wrong. I looked through all my gastric bypass diet and didn't see anything on his instructions - has anyone heard anything about this? — Lisa J. (posted on April 25, 2002)

I am 8 weeks post-op and have had 4 oz. of tomato soup made with enriched
milk (instead of water) once or twice a day for several weeks with no
problems (and am down 75 pounds). I haven't heard any warnings about
tomato soup - so for all I know I've been a bad boy - but thought I'd pass
on my experience.

I have also heard of no tomato soup because of the color (red). Same with
no red jello or no red koolaid.

As many have stated on here, you should always check with your surgeon or
dietician to be sure what you can and can not eat. Tomatoe soup does have a
lot of sugar in it and low protein compared to other available soups. Good
luck and happy losing.

If your surgeon didn't say anything about tomato soup or any other red
foods, don't worry about it. There's nothing wrong with it. I had lots of
tomato soup early post-op. I had a craving for it and still crave anything
with tomatoes!! Some docs don't want you consuming anything red, it has
something to do with checking for a leak. I'm not sure, maybe someone can
confirm that.

I'm 6 weeks post-op and was told not to have tomatoes. Maybe they're too
acidy for most people. Semms like you're doing fine with them but maybe you
should check with your Dr.

I was told that tomato soup was okay, but it's been causing me lots of gas
pain, so I've been avoiding it.

I am 3 wks post-op and I have tomato soup alot. I mix mine with water
because I don't like milk. They even gave me tomato soup in the hospital
when I was able to switch to a full liquid diet. No one said anything
about red food. I wouldn't worry about it but check with your surgeon or
his nurse just to be sure.

I am 2 weeks post op. I have been eating tomato soup since 4 days post op.
My surgeon had no problems with me eating it at all. I mix it with milk
instead of water, and even add some powdered milk for extra protien. Hope
this helps.. Good luck to you.

The reason a lot of surgeons and dieticians say no tomato soup is that it
has a lot of sugar in it and can cause dumping. If you can tolerate it,
well then it should be OK, but many people can't.

Check the sugar load in that. I konw MANY people who do not tolerate that
much sugar. I can only tolerate a very small portion, too. Sugar makes
gas, so that might be the problem.

YIKES!!! I just checked the label...12 gr. sugar in 1/2 cup. I could eat
a whole cup. 24 gr. sugar?!? I had no idea. I did not think of Tomato
soup as high in sugar.

I was given tomato soup in the hospital, when I was about 4 days post-op
with no problems...but as always, check with your surgeon. = >
