Question:
Has anyone had surgery with 100 lbs to lose and no co-morbidity?
I am curious to find out if any post-ops had surgery just at the minimum of requirements for surgery approval (@ 100 lbs to lose with no serious co-morbidities). Has anyone else been approved in a similar situation? Are you happy having had surgery or wish you had pursued a different diet option? Thank you!!! — Marie W. (posted on April 14, 2002)

Hi Marie. Are you sure you have no co-morbidities at all? Things such as
getting out of breath easily is considered one. And even if you do not have
diabetes or heart disease, if your family members do, this is important for
the surgeon/physician to know. I, too was concerned because I do not have a
lot of the problems that many morbidly obese people have- not yet anyways.
Right now I mainly have weak knees and ankles, and I stop breathing in my
sleep sometimes. I also have very irrugular periods. BUT diabetes and heart
problems due to weight is prevelant in my family... I have not had my
sugery yet, but am definitely looking forward to it!!

Thanks for asking this question. I've been doing the research part of this
surgery. I am just at the 100 lbs mark and no outward signs of problems.
My joints do ache - and I do tend to get out of breath - and diabetes and
heart problems run rampant in my family - both sides. I go to my family
physician Tuesday 4/16 - So all answers would be greatly appreciated...

I have about 110# to lose and very few documented co morbidities...I have
had Asthsma since I was 2, so have always had some shortness of breath,
some joint pain in knees and ankles, but nothing I ever saw a doctor for,
no high blood pressure, diabetes...etc although there is a small family
history of them. Anyway, I was approved on the spot..(still can't believe
it!) with United Healthcare Choice Plus. I am scheduled for open RNY on
June 20. Good luck in your process!

Marie, I had about 125 lbs to lose, a bit more than minimum and no
co-morbidities. Just the normal aches and pains and obesity related
annoyances. I was approved by my insurance within 4 days, no problems at
all. I have BC/BS Horizon HMO of NJ. I wish you the same good fortune. God
bless.

I too had a 125 to lose. I didn't want to wait until I had problems. I did
have to appeal to get approved. No regrets with the surgery other than a
little dismay tha it isn't coming off as fast as I would like.

I had about 115 pounds to lose and was probably the healthiest fat person
you can imagine!! However, when my surgeon told me that within 10 years I
would have one of the co-morbidities due to my weight AND that my weight
would take 10 years off of my life, I decided to have the surgery. I've
tries EVERY diet imaginable and I always regained the weight. It's been 5
1/2 months since my surgery and I'm down 80 pounds. Yes, I made the right
decision to have the surgery.

I had 90 lbs to lose and no co-morbids, except PCOS. I had RNY exactly 6
months ago and to date lost 74 lbs. Am I happy? Extremely! Go for it!

I had 100 pounds to loose and no co-morbidities. I am now 6.5 months out
and down 85 pounds. I wish you the best of luck!!! I was aproved in 3
weeks. From Blue Cross/Blue Sheild Federal PPO. I am thrilled I had
surgery!!! And I would do it again. Knowing all I know now I wish I had
done it sooner in my life! WOW what a differense there is in how I feel,
and how I look! You can look on my profile and look at my web site and see

In 10 months I have gone from 267 to 175 and I feel GREAT! At 5'9", I
thing 150 - 165 would be a good weight for me. At 175, I'm a
"success", having lost the anticipated percentage of my excess
weight. I feel great, don't have any regrets, and can't imagine any diet
program that would have come close to having these results.

I had 85 lbs to lose....started at 210lbs, had open RNY 3/26/01,
hit 125 lbs 6 months later. No problems with
insurance approval (Cigna PPO). I tried every diet imaginable
(haven't we all) and my WLS was the best thing I ever did
for myself. Good Luck.

I had 100 pounds to lose and only high cholesterol. I did this specifically
so that I wouldn't DEVELOP those comorbidities. Who wants to get sick? I
dieted my way right up to 230 pounds (I'm 5'1") so I knew diets were
not for me. Now I feel great, I look great, and--as long as I take my
vitamins and eat right--I won't get sick! Would I do it again? In a New
York minute! --Cheri (former size 22W, now an 8P)

I was 140 pounds overweight, with no co-morbidites. Even my blood pressure
was normal! I first looked into this surgery for vanity reasons and it was
in doing my research I learned of all the health problems I could develope.
I wanted this weight off me BEFORE they developed. I can't honestly tell
you that I'm happy I had the surgery. As I've "whined" before, I
never developed a tool to restrict my food portions. I can eat anything I
want, at just about pre-surgery portions. I never dump....never feel full.
I have to rely totally on self-control. I'm now looking into Atkins, as a
guide to help me. My concern is that if I can't lose the weight because of
this surgery (I've lost 51 pounds in a little over 4 months) and have to do
it by traditional dieting, have I set myself up for serious health problems
(mal-nutrition, etc.) for nothing? Obviously, the surgery is working to a
degree (afterall, my intestines are bypassed and I have lost weight), but I
lost faster on Optifast.
