Question:
are the triple lumen catheter's inserted in the neck while you are in surgery
I just found out I will be having a triple lumen catheter inserted in my neck. I want to know if they do this after you are under sedation or if they put it in before you go under. please someone let me know. — suzanne S. (posted on March 23, 2002)

They will place the central line after you are under anesthesia.

You can also request the it be put in your upper arm. I had me central
Line (this is what it is called) or pic line in for almost 3 months while I
was on IV's. It was in my upper arm. These things are a god send. I am
really bad with giving blood or putting IV's in me. They used this and was
able to give me IV's and take blood through it without even sticking me.

Hi. Just a clarification. A triple lumen line usually goes in the
subclavian or the internal jugular... a PICC line is inserted peripherally
(usually arm). There is a big difference... a PICC is used for long term
IV therapy. A triple lumen is used when multiple drugs that are
incompatible when mixed need to be given. JK, RN

Mine was inserted into my neck after I was put under. I had a temp IV into
my arm just to sedate me and then they put my neck IV after I was out.
