Question:
Menstrual blood clotting
Note-(not meaning to be gross) I am someone who always has blood clots during my period . Does this mean that I am high risk of developing clots after surgery? Is this something of no connection? — suzanne S. (posted on March 20, 2002)

I have always had problematic cycles, including large clots. I believe
this is not just blood, but also part of the lining of the uterus, that we
shed. I did not have any problems with blood clots during surgery. Hope
this helps.

I believe the prev. poster is correct. I too had very large clots during
my cycle, but now after losing 70% of excess, I no longer experience them.

I had the 'clots' during my cycle explained to me this way. They aren't
really blood clots of the type you might have during surgery. The lining
of your uterus gets thicker as you go through your cycle to prepare for
nurturing a baby. When you don't get pregnant, the lining is basically
discarded, so the cycle can start over again. So these aren't blood clots,
but rather pieces of the uterine lining. Just like the blood you shed
during your cycle is not blood coming from your blood vessels, but from
your uterus.
