Question:
Started a new job just prior to surgery????
Started an new job just prior to surgery? What was your experience? I was laid off, and now looking. Terrified that I will be at a new job right when surgery is scheduled. Staying off work is not an option for me financially. Any input???? Thank you! — Michelle P. (posted on March 20, 2002)

I started a new job about 3 weeks before I had surgery. I am contract so no
work, no pay. I waited until I was sure I had the job then talked with my
boss. I said I had scheduled a surgical procedure before I knew I would be
starting the job and that I would probably be off for 2 weeks. I offered to
postpone the surgery if he felt there were things he needed taken care of
before I went out. If I had been on a permanent basis I would have also let
him know that I did not expect paid time off as I had just started the job.
He was very nice about it and concerned. I told him it was a "good
thing" and he was satisfied with that.

I started a new job in May of 2000, knowing I had surgery scheduled for mid
June. I was very upfront about having the time scheduled, and negotiated
three weeks of leave for my surgery. I wanted them to know that I would be
out of the office so they could take that into account when they made a
decision about hiring me.
