Question:
I was recently diagnosed with Lupus and already have a thyroid condition.

Will having lupus ruin my chances for having the surgury?    — honeybee1247 (posted on March 20, 2002)

Hi there! I too have lupus, and while i'm still preop my doctor's are confident that should not be too much of an issue. However, i've had to work myself off the steroids to get the okay becuase they hinder healing and there is a greater risk of infection. It also depends on how bad you have it, what organs are involved etc. Though overall i think it will just take longer for you to feel 100% and i look at it this way, i know i have lupus, and its somethin i can't control and don't know what the future will hold with it, however i can with this surgery gain control of my weight and i think it will help with the lupus as well, taking all that weight off my poor joints and organs i think will benefit greatly! good luck to you and i hope all goes well, i have a few more hoops to jump myself, but hopefully come july i'll have my surgery :-)

I have lupus and hypothyroidism, and I had my original open RNY 15 months ago.. The lupus may cause you to heal a bit more slowly , but shouldnt prevent you from having surgery.. I suffered some serious complications as a result of my surgery and have had two subsequent surgeries, the most recent in Feb.. I havent had any problems with this last surgery.. If your lupus is under control, I think you will be ok.. I will keep you in my prayers.. Hugs,
