Question:
Strange question regarding morning mouth...
Hello all. This may seem very weird, and trivial, and maybe even groos, but I am curious if I am crazy or not. Since my surgery one month ago today, I have the most disgusting taste in my mouth when I wake up. Even if it's just an hour long nap. My mouth is so bad that I can't even stand it, nevermind the next lucky person to wake up with me! ;) I've always taken vitamins and antacids, so I know that's not it. It's really quite awful. Is this some strange phenomena particluar to me? Or have other's experienced it, is there a reason, and will it go away? Thanks. — PaulaM (posted on March 15, 2002)

Most likely it comes from ketosis where the body is burning the stored fat.
Another option and your Dr. can look at this is do you have thrush which
sometimes we get from antibiotics, a virus, etc. Medicine will help in
that regard. A suggestion: get those little Listerine breath strips that
you put on your tongue and they dissolve...keep them by your bed and pop
one in first thing in am.

I have the same thing happen to me, but what else happens.. is that it
wakes me up like at 4am and I have to get up and brush my teeth. The taste
and smell just grosses me out. From previous questions and posts I beleive
its from your body burning fat.

Besides ketosis, if you are taking any protein suppliments, the amino acids
in there really can give you bad breath. As much as I hate the bad breath,
it is really easy to take care of as previously posted ..the listerine
strips are awesome.

I remember when I would hardly eat anything in order to try and lose
weight, that same thing would happen. Like the previous poster, I believe
that is ketosis. Basically it is the smell of your body eating itself.
But that is a good thing after WLS! Maybe have breath mints or gum handy.
