Question:
Why is it I see so many different responses to eating Beef Jerkey?
Some days I read that Beef Jerkey is okay, and then the next day someone else is saying stay away from it? I dont understand why it would be so bad. I buy the 1oz size and it only has 70 calories and 1 fat gram and of course has lots of protein. I surely cant see anything wrong with that. Unless you just cant tolerate it as i'm sure some can't. But i'm only 3 weeks post op and can eat it just fine. I have not eaten the entire 1oz because it is filling, but nutritionally it doesnt seem like a bad choice. If someone disagrees, can you tell me why? Thanks :) — Summersect (posted on March 13, 2002)

I think the only real issue is whether you are far enough post op to eat
it. Each surgeon has such a different protocol for post op eating. In
many cases people aren't on "solid" food like jerky anywhere from
6 to 12 weeks post op. If your doctor has "ok'd" it for you,
then go for it. But, if you're supposed to be on liquids or soft solids,
well, jerky doesn't fit in that category.

I eat beef jerky all the time. I even carry in my purse. I am 6 months post
op RYN and almost 100 lbs lost. I only need to lose about 30 or 40 more
pounds. I will say I have eaten some beef jerky that didn't go down as well
as the kind I always get. I buy it from Wal-mart in the yellow can. If I
can help in anyway please feel free to e-mail me. I am not a Dr by any
means, but I can offer support and tell you what I have been through.

I love jerky, beef and hot pepper beef. however... it is salty and could
probably pack on a little water bloat, I would recommend keeping the water
uptake, especially when eating salty foods:)

When I ate beef jerky, it wadded up in my stomach and blocked my stoma. I
know it doesn't happen to everyone, but the doc said no matter how much I
chewed, it could wad, so don't eat it. I had to have an endoscope to clear
it after three days and major dehydration.

Try a different brand. Not all are extremely tough to chew. Also try using
kitchen sizzors and cut it up in small bits so you chew only small (tiny)
bites. I LOVE beef Jerky. And will definitely keep eating it.
