I am post op and losing my hair. My colour needs to be touched up, but I don't know if colouring my hair now will contribute to further hair loss. Anyone know? — Joanne C. (posted on March 13, 2002)

I color my hair every 4 weeks. Have not changed that routine either pre-op
or post-op. So - 3 weeks after my surgery on 5 July (and every 4 weeks
thereafter) I color my hair. No problem.

I decided to keep up with my usual "hair routine" right thru the
worst of my hair loss. I decided it was important to my self esteem to
look good...I didn't want to look unkept (gray showing, bangs to long etc)
so I just kept doing what I always did...which included hair treatments
once a week (Redkin CAT with protien). I had very thick hair and lost alot
over about 2 months, I don't know if I had not done the coloring etc. if I
would have lost less...that was about 5 months ago and most of it has grown
back!

I just recently (last night)spoke to my hairdresser about this same
subject. She says to go ahead and dye my hair, because its falling out
because of something inside me, not outside me. Anything I do to the hair
already grown out of my head cant make it fall out. It can damage it, but
not make it fall out. And since I have some bad grey hair at an early age,
I'm gonna go with her advice. : )

I just wanted to say that there are things you can do to your hair that can
make it fall out. I don't know about coloring but i have over-bleached my
hair and trust me it fell apart. So it is not true that you can do anything
to hair that is already grown out of your head.

I'm pre-op but have lost a lot of hair due to my health. When I spoke
with my hair professional about my hair and the possibility of coloring she
was very straight forward and advised me NOT to color my hair. She pointed
out that all hair colors have (I think she said Peroxide) in them which
damage your hair. If you do an at home color, even those that last a short
time have SOME in it. Of course the less permanent, the less it has in it.
She said if I was dead set on coloring my hair that maybe I should
consider just adding some highlights and suggested that I come to her that
way she could really do a GOOD job and only highlight a few strands at a
time where it would be most affective. I'm thinking that this might be an
excellent idea for someone who just needs a touch up or just want a change.
I opted for just a cut because I really didn't want to risk damaging what
hair I have left. I've been really surprised at how informative and
straight forward she has been. Just talking with her you can tell she
really knows her stuff, plus I think many beauticians would have just gone
for the extra money made to color, perm, etc your hair. My lady was so
great that when I finally had the guts about 2 weeks later to get it cut
really short, instead of just the 4 inches off my really long hair, she
didn't charge me full price and she cut me a break on one of her hair
styling products too!

Any chemicals can damage your hair, especially if your hair is weak or
already damaged. If you just need a change, consider a vegetable based dye
or a natural herbal dye, such as henna. It doesn't last as long, but it
won't hurt your hair at all. Good luck!

I have colored my hair every 6 weeks since I had surgery with no particular
ill effects. I was losing hair before I had surgery so began using Nioxin
products. I think the loss is minimal now and I love how my hair feels even
though I do have to wash it more often. Good luck!

Chemical processing can hurt your hair, but I don't think it would
contribute to falling out more. I would have them use a veg-based dye. I
had that done while I was pregnant and it worked nice.

Hello...just a tip..I am a hairstylist..and one of the first things we
learn is to never ever use a vegetable dye...especially a henna...its just
bad....it is like Sun In...even though you think henna fades..it never goes
away until it is cut off...it leaves a very bad residue on your hair and if
you try to use peroxide based color (almost all chemical hair colors have
peroxide in some levels) it will have bad effects..ie. making your hair
break..turning it green. and all sorts of other wacky things. If you did
want to do color (which I cant blame you as I cant live without something.)
try something semi permanent if your really worried..it covers grey nicely
but is not nearly as damaging. Also just a side note..unless you are going
way lighter with hair color...its not that damaging on your hair...in my
case it helps it by making it managable..just a thought!
