Question:
Has anyone suffering with RSD-Reflex Sympathic Dystrophy had this surgery?
I suffer from finger tip to finger tip RSD.(including shoulders and my neck) I am scheduled on 4/04/02 to have the open surgery. My family Dr. tells me, it can only help with getting rid of all the excess weight, which makes sense to me. I really would like to hear from anyone who knows of this disease or has it themself. I, for some reason, am not afraid of having the surgery..(YET) My main concern is, being able to take my meds. Two of my main meds are time released. (Oxycontin & Wellbutrin). They both cannot be crushed or cut. I've been told, I will be able to take the oxycontin but still am nervous about it, right after surgery. This will never take the RSD away, but I pray it will help in the slightest way. It would be very comforting to hear from anyone that knows of Reflex Sympathic Dystrophy! I've read so many Q & A's and not one has mentioned,RSD. Thank You... — Sue B. (posted on March 10, 2002)

Not sure of how to help you except to let you know that Oxycontin comes in
a liquid form. It is very similar to pill form and is called Oxyfast. I
used to right after surgery and it was really effective for pain.

Sue, I also have RSD. It is in my ankle. My orthopedic doctor thinks that
the weight loss will help with the pain but, of course, will not take the
RSD away. I have chronic pain, but have learned to cope with it. I have
had this for 6 years. My PCP doctor wants me to talk to the surgeon about
taking my meds after surgery. I will discuss it with him at my next appt.
I am presently waiting for insurance approval. Please e-mail if you like.
