Question:
2.5 weeks post-op and I am sooooo hungry. ?

I don't know what's wrong here. I am having hunger pains all the time. For example, I've been hungry all evening - for dinner I ate 1/4 cup of angel hair pasta with 1/2 tbspn of fat free ricotta (all okay with my doc). I took almost thirty minutes to eat and I am just as hungry now as I was before. Also, I haven't had any problems eating or drinking. Chicken, tuna, pasta, toast, protein drinks. All go down just fine...but I am often hungry. I can drink A LOT of water without any problems. I measure my food as prescribed and only eat that much, because I am afraid to eat until I am satisfied (I feel like that would be too much food). I follow all the "rules" because I want this surgery to be effective. I have lost 24.5 pounds already, but I can't live being this hungry all the time. Is something wrong? Any advice??    — [Anonymous] (posted on March 2, 2002)

Maybe you can try eating mostly only proteins. Carbs like the pasta tend to make us even hungrier at times. Protein seems to stay with us longer. It's the only suggestion that i have but thought it might help.

My dr. told us not to eat any type of pasta, bread, and to eat protein with every single meal/snack. Eat the protein first. Remember when we ate nothing but carbs & how it triggered "more" (such as cookies, pasta, etc.)? Eat protein first, then veggies, then fruit...stay away from pasta. The protein will satisfy you so you won't be hungry. I'm surprised at your dr. 24.5 lbs. is a fantastic loss for only 2 weeks.

Ithink your best bet is to stick to protein because pasta's fill you up to fast it is bulky and you know it swells when it is in your stomach. BEST to stay with protein first then veg.,then fruit.good luck wls friend 4MO POSTOP LOST 80 # Nancy M.

How are you making up your protein drinks? If you're adding high sugar liquids, like real juice or milk, that might be fueling your hunger. Or eating sugar foods, like yogurt or applesauce? For some people, even small amounts of carbs would make them just RAVENOUS. I also eat angel hair, but if carbs is the center of the meal, I have had a protein drink (made with water) FIRST to lay a protein foundation. Also, if a no sugar protein drink goes in your face FIRST thin in the day, you have more of a grip on your appetite all day than if you had your toast first. I don't eat protein food first, personally, because I get plenty of protein in my supps. But if my appetite rages, I know somewhere, I've sneaked a few too many g of hidden sugars in somehow. If you continue to never feel that semi-full satisfied feeling, you might ask for an eyeball in your pouch to measure your stoma. Ruling out a true mechanical defect will make your head feel MUCH better.

Funny you should write this at this time. I am 1.5 weeks post op and everyone I ask tells me it's "head hunger" But I too am hungry even after my proper measures of food. This isn't "head hunger" I have physical cramping/growling of the stomach. Last evening I saw that I was using a grahm cracker as a snack and got to wondering about the carb theory. This morning I started out with a cheese stick first then my starch and fruit. Today is going 90 % better. My body has been used to 3000 or more calories a day, hunger is a physical response that God put in us, no wonder my tummy is arguing with me, 400 - 500 calories just doesn't cut it. :-) Protein, Protein. :-)

Hi there, as an real early post-op 9 weeks ago, I had the hardest time dealing with my hunger. My problem was HEAD HUNGER!!! As I laid in bed recovering from surgery all these taco bell or carl Jr.s $6.00 burger commericals would come on. There I was looking at that food going crazy!! I would eat my soup hating it because I wanted the commerical foods I was watching. Once you can start eating more bigger selection of foods the hunger feeling goes away!! Thank God!!!

I take that stuff everyone hates! Proteinex 4 times as day. I have not felt hungry EVER! I am amazed, pre-op I was hungry 24/7. I am going along with protein theory like the above posters.
