Question:
Does anybody get nauseaus from taking calcium?
At first I thought it was coincidence, but I have stopped and whenever I start again, the sickness starts. I have tried tums and now taking vivactiv which are very good. I can't seem to understand it. — [Anonymous] (posted on February 24, 2002)

Carbonates are known to cause stomach upset. Since they are not absorbed
by the bones at all, you might want to switch to a citrate brand, such as
Citracal. You'd have to take 2 pills 3-4 times per day, but citrate form
does not seem to cause gastric distress.

I have problems when I take Citrical Liquitabs. For some reason it makes
my pouch burn. At first I thought it was coincidence, then I saw the
pattern. Maybe it was the carbonation in it, I don't know. I hope other
citrate brands don't have this effect on me, if I ever find one that the
pill isn't too large for me to swallow. Good luck in figuring it all out!

I was told that Tums didn't help because they're the wrong kind of calcium.
The recommendation was to take Citrical. However, the dietician also said
you could cut them into 4 pieces or so and take them over the course of the
day.

Cheri,
Try letting the Liquitabs sit until they are totally dissolved and no
longer fizzy. Then it shouldn't bother your tummy at all.
Tums and
Viactiv are useless forms of calcium. Also, both of those preparations are
high in sugar, which could cause the problem. Find yourself a good calcium
citrate and take that. HTH
