I had a medial RNY and I don't have a problem with my BM's. They don't
have much of a smell at all. I believe they smelled worse before from all
of the food I was eating. The gas I have a problem with probably about
once a week, but I think it may have to do with my food choices. I have
just started tracking what I eat before the smelly gas to try and determine
what is setting it off.

I think I have a medial (Perhaps 6 feet bypassed). I honestly believe
after a year and a half that the odor depends upon what you are eating.
For instance, if I eat a lot of fatty foods, my BMs are wicked. On the
down side, if I eat foods too low in fat, I'm constipated. With regard to
the gas, that can be horrendous in odor (me with fatty foods) and in
cramping. That too can be controlled. If I avoid brocoli and too much
salad, I rarely suffer. All in all, it's pretty managable and very much
worth it!

I know this might be a stupid question, but what is a BM's?

BM means bowel movement, also known as taking a dump, laying logs, walking
the dog, morning constitutional, crapping, going to the bathroom #2, etc.
Hope this helps.

I am 16 months post op and let me tell you, yes they are bad. I really hate
it, but it is worth all the "smelliness" so to say to be healthy.
It is now kinda of a joke around my house and my support group, well we
laugh alot about it!! I have found really nothing that seems to help it. I
just accept it now as a part of life. Hope this is helpful to you.

I had a distal rny in March and I haven't noticed anything "extra
smelly" about my BM's or gas. Ocassionally I have more gas than I
used to but I don't notice more of an odor than pre-surgery. Also, I'm
careful not to "bust loose" while in close proximity to others.
It hasn't been a problem for me. Good luck to you. Dana

I ddint have that surgery so I dont have that problem but in the support
group I go to there are several people who have mentioned a product on the
market that you can take that deodorizes you. It was made for people who
have had colon surgery or colostomy bags. Its supposed to be very good. I
dont know the name of it perhaps soemone else had heard of it. If youre
interested let me know and I will find out at the next meeting what its
called.

The product mentined in the last posted answer is Devrom, and it works!
I'm 15 weeks post op, a BPD with NO DS.. gas is an issue for me, but I
don't mind it so much. Devrom will not reduce the gas itself but it does
take the smell out. http://www.devrom.com will take you to the website.
