Question:
What can be taken to help with depression and mood swings,
but won't cause weight gain? I am interested in Paxil, but heard that it will make you gain weight. Any other suggestions welcome. Post op open RNY — [Anonymous] (posted on February 20, 2002)

Thats a question for your Doc. I was severely depressed about 6 years ago,
I took Prozac. It saved my life, and got my chemicle imbalance in check.
Took it for six months and have been off of it ever since. I dont remember
gaining weight from it.Sometimes there are sexual side effects. Some
anti-depressants work at helping you to lose.Disc it with your Dr., one
that is familer(sp) with these types of drugs.

Hi there...
My mother is on paxil and has been on paxil for over two years now. She
actually has lost weight. So, I wouldn't be too worried about it. But, you
can always talk to your doctor. There are more mild antidepressants like
Elavil, which never made me gain any weight. It didn't do anything for me,
but I have anxiety at times, but have never been diagnosed with anything.
Im posting anon to protect the confidentiality of my mother.
Good Luck

I work in the Mental Health field. I have observed many people who have
gained weight with antidepresents, or had sexual side effects. The one I 'm
inclined to recommend is fairly new, however there is no known sexual side
effects or weight gain reported, [in medical journals]. It is called
WELLBUTRIN. It is usually taken two times a day, 150mg tabs. Initially it
may cause drowsiness. If you overdose it may cause seizures.I have a very
close friend who takes Wellbutrin for depression and as an added bonus it
helped her quit smoking. Check with your Dr. Lots of Luck
